These Vater West Side drum sticks are formed from hickory—the most popular drum stick material. Hickory is dense and strong, so it is resistant to chipping and breaking. Stronger than maple, it also absorbs a lot of shock. As a result, these sticks lessen wrist and hand fatigue while playing.

    I've been looking for a wood tip stick that's basically a 5A with a "beefier" shoulder and less taper to the bead. This is almost exactly what I'm looking for! Just a tiny bit wide and heavy for me. I'll still use them, though.

    My personal sticks that I've been using for years is Vic Firth's "Buddy Rich" Signature Series sticks. The balance is perfect and unlike any stick I've played before or since. These Vater "West Side" sticks are virtually identical except for a couple things. They seem to be slightly heavier than the Vic Firth sticks as well as a little tougher...so it holds up better under my heavy hitting. The only other thing I noticed is that the butt end has a slightly different taper which is noticeable when I'm holding the stick closer to the end. This bothered me at first but I easily adapter after a few sessions. For virtually half the price, this is a super sweet stick that provides great value for anyone who loves the Buddy Rich Signature Series stick from Vic Firth.
