Overview

Taylor's 200 Deluxe Series, which includes this 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium acoustic-electric, delivers all the essentials of a great guitar – exquisite playability, a full and articulate voice, impeccable intonation up the neck, and Taylor's top-of-the-line, professional-grade pickup - at a price that's within reach of many. This collection strikes a sweet balance between tasteful design constraint and aesthetic variety, bringing Taylor's signature tonal clarity and playability into a stage-worthy mix of guitar options. The Deluxe moniker refers to the addition of a fully-glossed body, as opposed to only a glossy top, with a shaded edgeburst finish. In addition, the 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium ships in a deluxe hardshell case made by Taylor for optimal fit and protection.

Body Shape
A Taylor original, the Grand Auditorium helped establish the Taylor acoustic sound. The popular body style makes for a versatile guitar that yields ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the GA is an excellent choice.

Tonewood
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Solid Hawaiian koa is a hardwood that produces a natural compression, yielding more of a controlled "roll-in" effect to a note. The compression evens out a lively attack for a more balanced response. It delivers strong fundamentals with clear and direct focus - similar to mahogany - but with extra top-end shimmer and chime. Layered Hawaiian koa back and sides create a visually appealing and complementary platform for the vibrating string energy sent by the guitar's top. Layered wood is less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, making it an excellent choice for players who travel with their instruments or simply require more durability.

Electronics
Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the- saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. Because the pickup doesn't sit under the saddle, the bottom of the saddle comes in full contact with the bridge, allowing all the nuance of the guitar's tone to come through clearly whether playing acousticly or plugged-in. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before while playing plugged-in. Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. The Taylor Expression System 2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use volume, bass and treble controls.

Hardshell case included.

I perform regularly in Jacksonville FL, and this immediately became my main guitar. I've bought, sold, and traded so many guitars looking for the right one that it has become a joke in the family. I don't believe that I ever wrote a review on any of them. This one is a keeper. I've owned two other Taylor's with the es2 electronics, and both of those had a lot of string noise and boominess plugged in. The pickup probably needed adjusted on those, but this on is perfect out of the box. I didn't keep the other two. The tone is not overly bright. I've played a few other non Taylor koa guitars that were too chimey. This one is sweet and warm, but not too dark like a mahogany top. It is an awesome looking and sounding instrument. I've played it at three solo gigs in the two weeks that I have owned it so far. It was set up right out of the box. It was expensive but I expect to have it a long time and get my use out of it. I view laminate as a plus for durability, and I care mostly about plugged in sound anyway. I play acoustic rock..Everything from James Taylor to AC/DC. This guitar is versatile and performs well when strumming, finger picking and with power chords. If your around when this guitar gets its first scratch, you will see a grown man cry. If I sell this guitar then it is because I have a guitar buying/trading disease that is beyond help. The only thing better than this guitar would be a full head of hair, but that is wishful thinking.

My guitar has a gorgeous Koa top (much nicer than the promo pics), the ebony fret board has a deep black color across the entire neck, and the fretwork is flawless. The Expression System 2 is wonderful, and the action (on this particular instrument) is perfect. So, why did I only give it a rating of 3?

First, I take issue with where Taylor cut corners on the construction of this instrument. Upon inspection of the interior, I noticed that this series (and the 100-series) uses a narrow, cheap-looking wood edge strip to connect the top, sides and/or back to one another. On any acoustic guitar I've ever owned that was $1,000 or more, this piece was always a hand-formed, striated strip with a large surface area to attach the rest of the guitar to. The form piece used inside my guitar looks like a thin, inexpensive strip of barn wood that was cut in a junior high shop class. My obvious concern with this will be durability down the road – especially given that Koa can be a fussy wood as it ages.

My other beef with this particular guitar is that the nut was attached a hair off, so the high E string has a habit of sliding off the edge of the fret board if I'm doing pull offs. On a $500 guitar, this might be expected. Mine was three times that amount - as an import!

Comments about Taylor 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm new to the guitar-playing scene, but am so glad I sprung for such a high quality and beautiful instrument right out of the gate. I love playing it, handling it, and listening to it's bright, crisp, and sweet sound. Whether I'm playing loud or barely audible, it's amazing sound is hypnotic. After several months wandering from GC stores in Medford, Reno,Vegas, then finally Portland- looking for an upgrade, I could no longer resist when I discovered the Koa.----In summary, all I can say is Wow!

      Love at first sight

Comments about Taylor 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is love at first sight. First of all, the finish of this guitar is Gorgeous!! In my opinion, Koa is probably one of the best looking woods for a guitar, and on top of that it sounds beautiful. The neck of this guitar is great for finger picking and all styles of play. I also love the action of this guitar, there will be no adjusting needed for me. I recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking around the 1.5k budget. The price may seem like a lot, but it is totally worth it! I've tried many guitars (and have owned plenty) including, breedlove, gibson, fender, and martin. But this Taylor is something else. Go check one out for yourself!!!

Comments about Taylor 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was so ready to love a particular Martin that I had been studying. But- This Koa Taylor just does it for me. I can't quit admiring its beauty until I pick it up then I can't quit playing it. This guitar instantly improved my playing as I had become accustomed to some buzzing from my 28 year old ovation. Barre chords became cleaner and helped broaden my library as I could now stand to hear myself play them. Haven't plugged in yet but I'm excited to hear the results when I do. This is a great guitar and I'm so ready to hear it age as my plastic backed ovation never could!

Comments about Taylor 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased the guitar for my daughter's 25th birthday. I'm basically a jazz guitarist and have been at it for around 40 years and have played on many "jazz boxes". My daughter enjoys singing and playing Christian folk music. After visiting Guitar Center many times and playing on many of their display guitars I developed a love for the sound and feel of the Taylors. One day I mentioned to the salesman that I was looking for a guitar for my daughter. I believe she had played on one of the slightly smaller Taylor models some time ago and was comfortable with it. At the time she was playing on a shallow bowl Ovation. The salesman recommended the Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium in Koa . I played on it for an hour or two and fell in love with it myself. The model at the store had a lighter colored stripe down the middle which I did not care for so I had the store order another one for me. The one I received is very beautiful Koa with some curly grain on the front. It sound and plays beautifully. I honestly wouldn't mind owning for myself but I personally prefer a little larger size box. The sound is bright but has a sweet mid tone as well. This guitar came from the factory set up very nicely, no fret buzz or intonation problems. The neck seemed a little thinner than some of the other acoustics I've played so it fingered very easily. Amplified in a Fishman Loudbox Mini at the store, it sounded wonderful. I'll have to say that Taylor seems to be consistent in keeping within their own specs; the model I ordered felt exactly like the display one I played in the store. The hard shell case included is decent but it is made of plastic; a wooden one would have been nicer.

Comments about Taylor 224ce-K Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was given the chance to play the 4k version of this guitare few years ago and loved the koa wood sound. When i saw this one for 1500 couldnt pass it up the both sound the same just this one is darker in color to the more costly one. Only complaint i have is no case candy idk if i was ripped by gc and they removed it or what just got a owners manual that was it. 1500 could have given a pick or cloth or somthing. I also dont like getting open box guitar off shelf i purchased this in store was given one off the shelf to me that isnt new but used.

This is my 3rd acoustic guitar. I have been playing for over 3 years and wanted to treat myself to a quality built guitar that would not break the bank. This Taylor guitar exceeds all the competition at half the price. The Koa wood is an eye grabber. The sound is clear and warm. As time goes on the Koa wood will improve like a quality bottle of wine. I was expecting to pay $2,500 -$3k..... Guitar Center is practically giving this guitar away. This is a must have Taylor!

This guitar is made in their Tecate factory in Mexico. Don't let that discourage you. The Tecate factory was specifically designed to build quality Taylor guitars. Design team and QC leadership are the same folks who run the El Cajon factory. Facilities are 45 mins apart. Keep in mind a Taylor guitar made at either factory is still a quality Taylor guitar. I absolutely love everything about this guitar.

I had been shopping for guitars for some time and was originally going to buy this guitar due to the feel and beauty but decided to go with a Martin 000 which inevitably did not go through due to availability. Still wanting a nice guitar for Christmas I opted to go back to the 224ce koa and I'm so glad I did. When you open the guitar case, it's difficult to not be I total awe at the beauty. The koa wood is amazing and the sound is unique and beautiful. The playability is easy on your hands and fingers...flawless. I highly recommend this guitar. Taylor Guitars are so fun to play and so amazing for the guitar enthusiast. And may I add that the red velvet case is awesome. No regrets here and would definitely buy again and again.

The Koa wood on this guitar makes for a lush tone which is the reason I bought it...and, oh...it is a Taylor after all. I've had older usa made guilds and ovations but none of them were the same caliber as this guitar. It also has great action and the construction is second to none.

A fine, heirloom quality instrument as a awesome price.

I've played both professionally and to entertain myself for many many years, I've owned a fair amount of different guitars, so with that being said..... people who know me know i'm sort of picky. I had a buddy call while he was at Guitar Centers all excited and told me "You need to get down here now, I found the perfect guitar". A few weeks later, we rode down together and he handed me this "amazing guitar", I'll admit I did like the feel and sound of it immediately, but thought if i'm gonna spend some money, I'd get what I wanted (I was actually looking for a Gibson Dove). we had a guitar stand sitting there, so we grabbed a mid priced guitar, I played it and sit it on the stand. Each time I played a different guitar that exceeded the guitar on the stand, I would put that guitar on the stand as the standard to exceed. I played just about every acoustic in the place, from no names to very high end Martins and Gibsons, it literally came down to 2 Taylors. I picked the 224ce-K. over the other Taylor primarily because of the appearance. The 224ce-K, is well made, plays well and sounds great. I have no regrets.

This being the first $1000+ guitar I have purchased myself I am very pleased. I have played guitars in this category whenever I visited friends houses but being able to have one for yourself and have access to it all the time is great. I wanted something a little different than the standard spruce top look and when I saw, heard and played this instrument at guitar center I knew I had to have it. Few days later I bought one and am loving it. The finish is a little darker in person and is very well done, the koa is beautiful. The strings that came with it have a nice sound but I prefer the feel of martins m130 silk and steel. I think this set up is a little better for my style of playing. I don't own a 224ce, although I own many others, and I've played most Taylor guitars. I know many of the guys at the factory, including BT. Anyhow, just to clarify about that "cheap" wood strip that joins the back and sides, it's called "the lining". It is much easier and cheaper to relief cut that piece to bend it, so what appears to be hand formed, is actually the easiest way to do it. Having a solid lining is much more desirable, and is a big factor in bringing out the tone and responsiveness. When the RTaylor line was being concieved, the design team struggled over the idea of solid lining because it's so labor intensive. In the end they decided to go with (almost no other manufacturer does), which is one reason an RTaylor was so expensive (and so responsive). I'm actually surprised the 224 has solid lining, but it may be to help compensate for the ply back and sides. As far as the nut being off, they will fix any defect no questions asked.

I have only been playing for a couple years now but have played with many different acoustic guitars and the way this one feels from the fret board to strumming is comfy and easy to transition for chords or lead riffs and just sounds amazing.

Excellent product. I've been around instruments since birth and squandered with great ones by my parents. I just turned 19 and bought this as my first personal guitar to sing and play with. It is an amazing instrument for the price. Well worth it.
