Description
Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL -the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away-yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.
Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality -over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortion and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.
Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.
One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.
Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch-perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

Terrific So Far
I recently bought a new acoustic guitar, and I wanted a field recorder to record song ideas. Obviously, I wanted the recording unit to have decent mics. I wanted to have the option to record in .wav or mp3. I wanted an on-board speaker to let me sample my takes. I wanted the recorder to act like a portable hard drive that allowed me to simply drag-and-drop my recording onto a computer. Beyond this, I just wanted ease of use, and I didn't want to have to spend a lot of time fidgeting with recording and output levels in different settings. The DR-05 has delivered on %100 of my wants so far. The recordings sound great (certainly beyond "good enough" for song writing). Thus far, I recorded solo and acoustically with my band, and, with the click of a button, the unit was able to auto-select recording levels to avoid a recording that was too quite or too loud (distorted). The recordings sounded clean, and they were useful in the writing process. I was able to preview the recordings via the mini-speaker. Then, I plugged the unit into an 1/8 inch (headphone/ipod) jack into a stereo and listened to the recordings with the whole band, and that was simple. Then, I plugged the unit into my computer's USB port, found the unit appearing as a portable hard drive, clicked through two folders to find the stored mp3s of my recordings, located my recordings, copied them, and pasted them onto my computer. I had the tracks emailed to my bandmates in less than five minutes. Piece of cake. I'll add that my initial entry into small recorders was the micro BR, and it was inconvenient, lacking, and a hassle to do specifically what I described above. Lastly, I cannot comment on what qualities and features the field recorders one class up in price from this unit can provide you.

Broke after 2 years
I purchased this about two years ago. The other day I went to use it and the screen was black. Since the controls are menu driven, and the screen is not working it is impossible to use. There is no obvious reason why this occurred, The unit was not dropped, exposed to extreme temperatures, exposed to moisture or in any way mishandled. It lasted a little longer than its warranty. Manufacturers response was to "Buy a New one". I will probably go back to using my 20 year old tape recorder.

The product functions great. Works perfectly. However, I bought online for in store pickup and unit was in original packaging but had been used. Soft feet on bottom had material missing, the recorder had several audio still on the memory card.
I would recommend to anyone.

I bought this Unit strictly for use as a "notebook" for ideas. It's more than i can ask for. Amazing, cool, easy to use unit. And the sound is amazing for such a small unit.

Way too confusing. Why don't you make a nice east to read simple model. If the directions were any smaller and the ink a little lighter, it would be a scratch pad.
Really great, especially for the price.

Can this be placed center of table to record conversations? IE podcast interviews?
This recorder would work well for recording conversions, interviews and podcasts. The condenser mic has a fairly wide range, so it would be able to pick up audio from the center of a table. This recorder would work well for recording conversions, interviews and podcasts.
