Tama SLP 5.5x14 Classic Maple

TAMA

Description

When drummers dream of maple snare drums, the Tama S.L.P. Classic Maple Snare Drum is surely near the front of the pack. With a robust 8-ply, 7mm choice maple hardwood shell, a rich antique maple finish and classic chrome hardware, this drum projects a balanced, resonant, and open sound to satisfy the ears of even the most discerning percussionist.

Tama's work on identifying the ideal snare sound led them to develop the new "Sound Arc" Hoops which add sustain, wider tuning range and a fuller frequency response. Hearty brass tube lugs will ensure a long lifespan for your tension rods, as well as your tune. And finally, the Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Steel Snappy snares will emphasize needed punch and attack, as needed.

This drum rocks. I played an 8" deep brass snare forever, big drum, big sound. Great for the metal days but I have to be a little more versatile now. I am fortunate enough to have a nice Mapex kit provided at our rehearsal space and really enjoy the sound of the maple snare. My personal kit is an 81 Tama Superstar so I figured I would give Tama a try when I started shopping for a maple snare. The videos on all of the SLP products are amazing but professionally produced so I was skeptical that the drum would sound as good in real life. Let me tell you, Tama did not let me down. Great quality and sounds every bit as good as the video and then some!! I put the Evans Genera HD Dry on top and left the factory reso head in place and WOW!! Big fat sound with the crack we all want but just enough warmth and no unwanted overtones. Rim clicks sound like you're playing some kind of percussion block especially if you play right over a lug. The best feedback came from my band. They dig this drum! I did a side by side with the Mapex Pro M that has the same batter head and it wasn't even close. The guys all said no contest. The Tama is more open with more depth and just overall a bigger sound. Couldn't be happier.
