collapse expand iconDescription

Tama's S.L.P Big Black Steel Snare Drum is a titan of tonal fortitude. At 14" in diameter and 8" deep, this massive snare produces a huge, wet and resonant sound that cuts through the mix with ease. Its 1mm-thick steel shell delivers a blend of low-end thunder and high-end sizzle for a versatile tone that suits hard-hitting styles. Triple-flanged Steel Mighty Hoops provide rigid, non-choking rimshots and articulate accents. Played hard, soft or anywhere in between, the Big Black Steel snare has a deep, penetrating character that dominates.

Enormous Size Yields Monstrous Tone

The Big Black Steel snare colossal 14" x 8" size gives it a cavernous tone with tremendous resonance and projection. Each stroke elicits a full, saturated sound with lengthy sustain. The expansive shell also provides a wide dynamic range, from hushed ghost notes to face-melting rimshots. For drummers seeking a bold, all-encompassing snare tone, size matters.

1mm-Thick Steel Shell Delivers Versatility

At the heart of the Big Black Steel snare is a 1mm-thick steel shell, which produces a blend of low-end rumble and high-end cut that suits an array of musical styles. The dense, rigid steel provides a firm tonal foundation and crystalline rimshot, while its thickness yields warmth and resonance. Whether you play metal, hard rock, punk or beyond, this versatile, characterful snare is ready to deliver.

Built to Withstand Punishment

Tama designed the Big Black Steel snare to endure the hardest-hitting playing styles. Its robust steel shell and thick Steel Mighty Hoops are built for power. Triple-flanged hoops provide rigid rimshots and prevent choking. All hardware is heavy-duty. Played with force, this brawny snare unleashes its full potential. Yet its sensitivity also allows for nuanced playing. Built Tama-tough, the Big Black Steel snare thrives when pitted against the most extreme playing.

Loud drum but poor manufacturing

Snare side hoop was out of round. Snare wires have a twist and are not straight. Snare throw-off adjustment screw is rough and the mechanism is flimsy. There is a medium sized bump on the snare side bearing surface. After fixes, the drum is loud and has lots of ringing overtones which require some muffling. With muffling, the sound is good and loud.

Better than my stock snare in all areas. I would suggest purchasing one of these over spending money on new heads and wires for an average stock kit snare. This thing rocks! Better feel, touch, tuning, sound , look… Happy with the performance of this drum.

  • Great sounding LOUD snare.

Excellent build quality and the flat black finish is perfect. It wasn't as versatile as I had hoped but for hard hitting metal/rock and punk I don't think you could beat it in this price range. Didn't sound great out of the box but after installing an Evans Dry Genra it sounded great.

  • Always wanted to invest in a great sounding snare

This thing is amazing! Everything I have ever wanted in a snare for this price is unheard of! It's perfect for anything and everything. I did change the head after a week. The factory head was ok. It will get you by. Coated. I replaced it with a Remo controlled sound coated. It has a black dot under the head. And with one gum dot, you have excellence! It's really a great sound. Good for any type of music.
