Sterling Audio UMS Utility Microphone Shield

Description
The compact and lightweight Sterling Audio utility microphone shield allows for precision control and variability in your professional recordings by isolating microphones from unwanted echo and excess noise.
Podcast and Desktop Isolation
The UMS does an excellent job of minimizing unwanted vocal reflections for podcasts, YouTube videos and other desktop recording situations. By isolating the microphone from room surfaces, it provides the clarity and articulation needed for professional results.
Snare and Hi-Hat Isolation
The UMS's flexible gooseneck clamps to most mic stands at any angle, allowing for complex mic placements like isolating a hi-hat from a snare drum. This gives you a clean, controllable mix and the option to add ambient room mics for a full sound.
Crash and Ride Cymbal Isolation
In addition to intended sounds reflecting off untreated room surfaces into the mic, unwanted sounds can bleed into the pickup pattern. The UMS prevents these issues, allowing for a focused capture of the intended audio source.
Lightweight, Compact Design
Constructed of lightweight aluminum, the UMS is easy to position and transport. A compact size means it takes up little space, making it ideal for small studios and live venues.

Works pretty well in a pinch, worth the money
I bought this for doing voice over on the road. Often times I find myself in a place that's less then desirable for recording. There are other more pricey items out there designed as portable booths...but they really aren't what I consider "portable". They're also pretty expensive. This reflector is both portable and inexpensive. It all seems reasonably well made. For sure it significantly reduces the echo in your room. Is it perfect? No. But honestly, it's really pretty good and in your average hotel room, it serves it's purpose for me. Can't go wrong for the money.

Does The Job

This works great in my home studio to keep the feedback down between me, my mic, and the speakers. Would be better if the goose neck ends had metal threads instead of plastic. The backing is also plastic so that should make the price lower for the small size. But for my use, it does do the job.

While the product is smaller than I thought it was going to be, it did help isolate/dampen my vocals enough to make a pretty sizable sound quality difference. If you don't have a good space that is really dead, this can help quite a bit.
Small but effective

I recently picked up a Neumann TLM 102 and realized (after plugging it in) that I would need something to help kill reflections when recording vocals in my home studio. My set up is in a living room with carpeted floors and 3 couches, so even though it is not professionally treated, there is enough sound absorption already that I knew it would not take much to get rid of the flutter I was hearing. I actually purchased both this and the much larger SE Electronics Reflexion Filter X. After experimenting a bit with placement, I found the Sterling to provide minimal but effective reduction in room reflections, while the SE shield actually was a bit of an overkill and resulted in a more muffled sound. To be clear- I had very specific needs and circumstances, and I could see how the Sterling would not make much of a difference with other mics. But in my case, with a tiny mic like the TLM 102, it served its purpose and tightened up my vocal takes enough to be passable. Larger mic likely would not benefit at all, and if your room is untreated, don't expect any miracles from something so unsubstantial. But in the right situation this gets the job done, and I can honestly say that although a bit flimsy, the gooseneck allowed for me to position not just behind my mic but also angled slightly above to kill reflections coming off the ceiling- which was 90% of my problem! My suggestion is to take advantage of Guitar Centers's 45 day policy and test it out before committing to it. Another big plus for me is this size is compact and fits nicely in my limited desktop space.

Does this shield come with the stand attached in the picture ?
This comes with the clamp and rod that are attached to the shield shown in the picture. It would still require a microphone stand to attach it to.
