Wide dispersion

The back of the monitors feature a balanced XLR input, a balanced TRS input and an unbalanced RCA. They have a robust power switch, a rotary level dial, high-frequency filter with three parameters—+2dB, –2dB and neutral 0—and low-frequency filter with three parameters—+3dB, –3dB and neutral 0. These features allow you to tune your speakers to your room for optimal playback monitoring when mixing and producing so you’re assured the best sound possible. MX5 monitors deliver 70 watts of high-efficiency, low-distortion, Class A/B amplification with 42Hz–22kHz frequency response.

Sterling MX5 Studio Monitor Front View With Computer In Background

Superior damping

The front of the monitors feature acoustically engineered 5" low-frequency drivers that offer superior damping. This minimizes any sonic artifacts and unnatural resonance to ensure a clean, natural sound for referencing your mixes. It has a four-layer voice coil which provides greater motor force for outstanding low-frequency performance. The 1" silk-dome high-frequency tweeter features a powerful neodymium magnet for a smooth and natural high-frequency response.

A Home Studio With Sterling MX5 Studio Monitors on Stands Beside a Desk Used for Recording and Mixing Music Music

Outstanding performance

The MX Black Series monitors are designed to provide optimal frequency dispersion even when listening off-axis. This means they’ll sound great in imperfect acoustic environments, like most home and project studios, to give you an accurate representation of your music. The bi-amplified Class A/B design ensures superior transient response and a natural bass presence. They also look fantastic with a sophisticated dual matte black finish and backlit Sterling logo, looking as good in your studio as they sound to your ears.

I really, really like them...really

I've only had these a couple of weeks but, so far, I really like the way they sound. If only used just for play back of any and all music, they put out some excellent sound. Very neutral and pleasant just to kick back and use these in my small house. Ran them through all manner of music to "break" them in varying the volume and what not for 20 to 30 hours. Blues, rock, new wave (80's), grunge, metal...they perform admirably in all genres. The bass output is pretty impressive (to me) and it's tight. Rush sounds fantastic to me, and I use several of their albums to test out speakers. Because...why not? Technical drumming and fast paced bass riffs. Sounds wonderful... I'd hate to call these entry level monitors or say they sound great "for the price", but that's technically what they are. And they do sound great for the price. They replaced my wonky KRK Rokit 5" RPG2's that started to make a very annoying buzz just when powered. Better sounding just because they are new? Placebo effect? They sound "different" to me. And better, IMO. And it's just my opinion. If you have a small house or live in an apartment...they get plenty loud enough to piss off your neighbors. I have the volume set to 12 o'clock and running through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 giving me room to just about go full volume on the Scarlett in ear piercing fashion. They can get to hearing damaging highs and still sound "good", to a degree. Regarding that volume knob...Way too "loose". Another reviewer mentioned it "drifting" and I can totally see that happening with enough vibration. The KRK's are "stepped", they click from one point to the next. These are entirely to loosey goosey and easily changed with just a bump, or, like the other reviewer said, with vibration. Aside from that, I think they are pretty solid regarding all other aspects on the backside. I've only tinkered with regard to "recording" (you know, what they are intended for) and my old stuff sounds different, in a bad way. I've made a bunch of changes in how and where everything is set up so it's to be expected (I would guess). Sound deadening materials, placement of monitors, everything. Haven't done that much recording in the past 7 plus years. Everything in the past was done in a 10' X 10' bedroom. I'm in a wide-open space now. I'm an Apple Garage Band "enthusiast", with Logic Pro and various other bits and pieces of software. Not a professional in any sense of the word but I do have a good "ear" for music. I think these are worth every penny. Will they hold up? Time will tell. My KRK's are about 10 years old and realistically very lightly used. For the capacitors (from what I can tell) to go bad and for what I paid for them, they were very disappointing in the long run. Let's hope I get my monies worth this time... P.S. I only give 5 star reviews for absolutely jaw dropping, perfect things in life.

Cheap components do not make for a long lasting speaker

Owned a pair for abour 4 years. Loved them for that time, but eventually the capacitors in one of them blew. I replaced them and bought some spare capacitors in case it happened again, and the repaired speaker worked great. Then, about 6 months later, the other one blew. I replaced the capacitors but it was still broken and part of the circuit board had shorted and destroyed the tweeter. These are not good enough quality to he daily drivers. I'm switching to some KRKs.

I just set up a producer's work station. These monitors are clean, clear and pretty true to the original sound. I had the KRK, and traded them for these MX5s. So far, I'm very pleased.

Compared the sound prior to purchase at GC near me to the JBL & M-audio near the price range.. These sounded the best. JBL's trebs were more 'cutting' My old MX3s lasted acouple years and died through no fault of its own. Mine are routed using adapters straight into pc not interface.

Do the high frequency drivers deliver a smooth high frequency response or is it more rock and roll? I'm needing these for more of a R&B sound.
