Simmons SD550

Picked up my SD550 assembly was a breeze. I'll use it for light stuff, dinner sets, older crouds etc. I've always played acoustic, I have a 20 pc. Ludwig kit with a rack mount. It requires a rodie and the hulk to set it up. & I'm neither. This thing weighs less than 40 pounds. It can be carried in the back of my small car.

Maybe a good deal for the money but not that good.

The sensitivity seems to be an on and off thing with the kit. Many ghost notes get lost in the performance of it. Cheap built shows as my snare developed a cut through the first layer of the mesh head already. (I use nylon tip 5B sticks which shouldn't have done that). Some of the sounds are ok but most are somewhat cheap and the balance of the kit sound (without spending lots of time tweaking and so forth) is not that good. The double stick glue on the velcro pads that come with the pedals comes off and your pedal will glide all over the place. The kit may be a good deal because of the price point but don't expect much, specially if you ever played on a real good electronic kit like the Roland.

  • Horrible deal. Store shipped me broken items and knew it.

I bought a display model, and was ensured by Store manager that it worked and was slightly used because of being floor model, but was still new and in good working order. The first cymbol i grabbed out of box was cracked all way across it, with a worn out sticker on back. Clearly happened way before they shipped it, which tells me they shipped me a broken product.

  • Great set. sounds, price!

Had it for a while, was under a warranty, had two snares one tom and just now a ride cymbal fall apart on me. I am NOT a monster drummer and never used anything heavier than 5bs on it. Sound was good when it worked and wasn't waiting on replacement parts, which it seems you can only send back not buy. Not good. At time of this review I'm going to need to finally look into a replacement kit. Won't be Simmons. I liked the idea of the mesh but not on this this kit. Other than being fragile only other bad point is regardless of sensitivity settings it was really hard to balance the snare and rimshot triggers. Good points are the rack seemed well built though and "head" sound unit was good as well. Able to mix in play along track with 1/8 jack input

  • A ton of fun to play.

I use this drum set (my first one ever) at home to play around with. Great sound through the headphones and I love that I can hook my phone up and use the 'backing track play music' app to play along to (has the drums stripped out of the music). It is so much fun!

I play drums bass and guitar all electric so they're all perfect for apartment playing with headphones. Love the pads and I replaced the single kick with a Simmons kick pad and double pedal and it works great.

  • Good beginner drum set

Can the system and module run on 240v if I have a European adapter?

    Open Reply - Gear-Support
The drum kit would need to plug into a Step Down 220V to 110V Voltage Converter and not just an adapter. These can be easily obtained online.
