Perfect for home studios
I purchased this kit for use in a home studio and use it along with virtual drum software. The drums are responsive and produce a great variety of voices, although I recommend upgrading the bass drum pedal to an actual pad and pedal system (the bass drum pedal is not very responsive for quick hits). This kit is almost perfect for a professional studio setting, but certainly meets all of my needs in the Home studio setting. The Rack is a bit cheap, specifically the joints. I've already stripped two of the plastic keys while tightening them. They are tight, but I'll have to loosen those joints with pliers if I every want to transport it. Having said that, NOT recommended for touring or constant tear down and set up.

Purchased, then immediately returned.
Background: Vocals: 20 years. Guitar 18 years. Bass Guitar: 16 years. Piano: Off and on 10 years. Drums: Intermediate at best off and on for the past 10 years. Violin: 3 years. Most certainly not a professional drummer but if there's two things I'm acquainted with, it's sound, and responsiveness. The preset sounds were garbage for my ears. Ability to tweak sounds and create own settings aside, the preset sounds really missed the mark for me. Even the only slightly better Yamaha DTX400 that one of my private music students has, has at least 1 good preset that sounds akin to an actual acoustic set, whilst the Simmons 500 hasn't even one preset that sounds anything like a practical acoustic set. The biggest reason for the return. The hi-hat controller functionality was abysmal. I'm not even 25% the drummer from the Mars Volta is, but my closed to open hi-hat notes weren't even registering at 16th note rates. To have that no where near satisfactory left an instant sour taste in mouth and was the main factor in deciding to return. In compare the Yamaha DTX400 wins leaps and bounds over the Simmons 500 hi-hat functionality. Not to say the Yamaha DTX400 is worth buying either but it's at least 3 to 4 points better than than the Simmons 500. *Good Points* (they do exist in this model) - Sturdy pedal and drum frame construction. - Didn't even need the manual to set it up, just used the picture on the box. - Snare and tom pads had great bounce to them. - Kick worked great. - 1 solid drum kit of a space/alien effect. Just 1. - rim shot If there was improvements to the hi-hat controller and preset sounds, it'd make a decent and affordable set. However, with electronic kits, after reading many different reviews and functions of various models like Alesis, Yamaha, Roland, Simmons, Pintech, and ddrums.... Long story short, save up the extra 200 to 300 dollars, and get either a new or used Roland, that's what I'm doing.

Not fair but I gave it 4 stars because I now there are better one made, But it is % stars in my daughters eyes! As far as Guitar Center Online goes they can go fly a kit - do not use online to buy go in to the store and show then the deal you found and let them take care of you, first drum set I was charged it was so post to ship next day after waiting 3 week and calling customer service but never came ever! second set same thing was about to happen, then they found me a set on display in Texas and it was on clearance by the time it shipped so I got a great price but somehow I was over charged and it took 2 week to correct it, DO NOT USE GUITAR CENTER ONLINE TO MAKE PURCHASE - ONLY TO FIND INFO & BEST DEAL
I would recommend Guitar Center to everyone!
