Simmons
Description
The Simmons SD1200 Expanded Kit is a premium electronic kit designed for drummers looking to master their craft with a custom sound library matched with state-of-the-art mesh pads and cymbals for realistic feel and sound—plus, an additional 10" tom and 12" crash cymbal for more sound and playing options.

Housed in a distinctive drum shell design, the SD1200 12" dual-zone snare is responsive to nuanced playing, and includes its own stand to get the angle just right. The snare and four toms are all dual-zone, enabling you to trigger alternate voices. Each drum pad includes dual-layer, tension-adjustable mesh for customizable, lifelike feel. The SD1200 includes a mesh kick drum that's designed to accept your favorite beater pedal, giving you a familiar feel right from the start. The two crash and single-ride cymbals are 2- and 3-zone (bell/bow/edge) with a choke function for dynamic effects. A variable pedal allows for complete control over the dual-zone hi-hat to get smooth semi-open sounds, trashy edge accents, splash and more. A solid hex rack prevents drums from slipping while playing, even throughout the most demanding beats, fills and solos.

The SD1200 sound module features a large, color LCD screen, providing a detailed view of kits and editing functions. 50 preset and 25 user drum kits cover a huge range of styles, including classic rock, modern pop, R&B, jazz, metal and a range of world music styles. Dedicated faders, knobs and buttons simplify kit customization—from quick mix changes to wild, filtered sound designs.

Practice along with built-in songs, use the metronome or plug in a USB to play along with your favorite songs. A headphone out combined with the SD1200 Expanded Kit’s mesh pads makes for ideal private practice sessions. MIDI and USB outputs connect to your computer allows for DAW recording, triggering a plug-in instrument or importing your own WAV files. Bluetooth MIDI provides simple, wireless connection to your smartphone or tablet.

The Simmons Advanced App for iOS makes it even easier to customize your SD1200 Expanded Kit, recall and edit drum kits, or practice with recorded tracks. The app even includes a sampler to record new sounds, then import directly them into the module without having to use a computer.

The Simmons Signature Sound Library is an expansive collection of the world’s most coveted drum kits and snares, recorded with the same world-class audio equipment made famous on classic albums. Simmons’ VAR technology offers many dynamic levels of drum recordings, resulting in true-to-life feel and sound. Samples are recorded multiple times to avoid the “machine gun” effect of simply repeating the same sample. Classic cymbals were recorded in stereo and have a long, natural decay for maximum realism. The SD1200’s 764 sounds include a wide collection of world percussion and vintage electronic drums round out the collection for creative inspiration.

I'd send it back. Used over a month only got one set programmed. The mesh heads are good but if tightened for stick response they re-trigger a lot. If loose they double trigger or crosstalk. I feel they will break if struck hard. User kits are impossible to program, the instructions are vauge and don't have step by step explanation of progamming. I've found inconsistancies in them too. The preprogrammed kits are OK and the library is awesome, but it's the only thing I've found that's good. I was contacted by Simmons and Guitar Center and heard nothing else from either. I've played Simmons SDS 9, and now own SD 1500, 1000. and 2 SD 7 kits that we play for kicks and these kits are more durable and easier to work with. The pads far exceed the mesh pads, and programming is a sinch compared to these new kits. Most drummers get used to one set and when new stuff is played,it's troublesome. Unfair to release a kit for 2 years and archive it forever, but if Simmons holds true, these will disappear too. Best thing for them in my opinion. They aren't responsive, too much difference in rims and heads, no follow trigger on cymbals, the utility mode offers a little help, but only threshold and crosstalk have effect on the progamming, user wave is poorly explained. I went sound by sound to get one kit progammed and I'm working on the 2nd now. These drums should be shock mounted on the rack to prevent problems and the head-rim function should be seperate triggers. The rack is just OK, but plastic parts will break easily if over tightened. The wires are sub standard and I got the same filmsy power wire that broke before? I couldn't recommend them at all and if I could, I'd send them back. The archived kits are far better!

  • Nice kit Why can't anyone make a decent bass drum pad?

I use this to practice at night when I don't want to disturb the household and neighborhood. It's a great kit, great sounds. I have 2 complaints. The clamps for the rack are made of plastic. They are better constructed than others, but still... plastic? Hard to thing they would hold up well if I used this kit for performances. And the big one! The bass drum pad is garbage. It's not planned to properly mount a bass drum pedal to it. When you clamp your pedal down, the back part with the "spurs" lifts off the ground, so it bounces around. Especially if you are using a double pedal. Secondly it doesn't really feel at all like a bass drum head. I could get over that if it was stable. I'll probably modify the clamping area, and save up for a decent bass drum pad from Roland or some other aftermarket. Overall I'm happy, just be aware, the bass drum pad is gonna annoy you as you wonder if anyone actually ever tested it before they started churning them out.

This kit is being used all day as there are 3 drummers in the family. I love the module and seamless connection to the App on my iPad. Songs in my iPad library mix in with the kit for great play along with the ability to change song tempo. Great value, looks beautiful.
