I play Bluegrass, jams and band. Mostly guitar. I've been curious about learning Bass for awhile and finally settled on this one. If you read the Bass forums, anything short of a Kay or Engelhardt isn't worth buying. Not True! Straight out of the box it needs to be set up right, but every Bass should be. I decided to take it to the best luthier I know... after installing a set of LaBella Hybrids, adjusting the action to the new strings, and moving the sound post about an inch... this thing is a monster! He had a hoss of a Kay Bass in his shop and the Thumper after set up pretty much matched the sound to me. So, I spent another 250 on top of the Bass for set up and strings, but it is every bit comparable to a 5000 Bass. Even the luthier was impressed. He posted pics and description on his Facebook page. I included it in the photos.

It looks very pretty. plays fairly well for the price. I think it can play better with some adjusting. I did buy a repair plan. but I haven't taken it in to have it adjusted yet so I can't really give a review on that yet. So far I'm pleased with it.

I use the Thumper primarily for swing and bluegrass. My old bass was 4/4 size so I was a little hesitant in going down in size. That being said, this 3/4 has better projection through the low and higher frequencies, I was surprised. The adjustable bridge is a nice bonus, and the carry bag is good quality as well. The strings are fine, I will probably put nylon strings on but, it depends on what you're going for.

I'm used to a 4/4 size. This is a bit smaller however, carries both low and high waves fairly well. The bridge adjust was a nice bonus. The stock strings are fine. The soft carry bag that comes with is good quality. It does exactly what it is called.

Are you aware that the in the picture of the instrument in its bag it is placed in the bag backwards. The bridge should not be facing the shoulder straps.

Trying to find a quality Double Bass, that is in my budget range, for my granddaughter who plays in her school's orchestra. Teacher says she is the most talented and motivated double bass student he has had in seventeen years and she has been accepted to a top-notch school of the arts next year. Is the Thumper strickly for bluegrass or can it also be used in an orchestra setting? Thanks, Ron

The Silver Creek Thumper Upright String Bass Outfit would also work well in an orchestral setting.
