Went into my local GC recently to trade in some old gear and check out a guitar more suited to metal than my single-coil Fenders, and ended up walking out with this beauty. I was originally looking at the regular C1 but the only one in stock was a dinged up demo unit. While the sales associated checked inventories for the transparent black finish C1 I decided to try out the Evil Twin. And wow, I thought the regular C1's Thin neck felt good, but the Evil Twin's Ultra Thin profile blows it away! So much thinner and faster and just felt great in my hand. Tone wise, the Fishman Fluence bridge is a solid pickup and definitely nails that metal/prog-rock tone I was looking for. It's very comparable to the EMG 81, although I do prefer the 81 slightly more. Volume knob gives some good control over gain and the tone knob is useable at any position (unlike some guitars) and the push/pull gives a darker, more passive voice. The Sustainiac neck pickup is essentially a noiseless single-coil and is considerably lower output than the bridge pickup. Its alright sounding, certainly can give some good tones but I'd prefer a normal humbucker instead. Which brings us to the Sustainiac system as a whole. When engaged, the Sustainiac uses the bridge pickups output (regardless of the pickup selector's position) and feeds that into the special coils on the neck pickup to give you infinite sustain by vibrating the strings. The other 3-way switch selects the sustain modes. Regular infinite sustain of the root note, harmonic focused sustain, and a mix of the two. I'm not entirely sure how much I would use this is my regular playing, but it can make some cool eBow type sounds or infinitely droning open notes. Overall, unless you're super excited by the Sustainiac's potential, you're probably better off getting the regular version that has an actual Fishman Fluence neck pickup. Either way, the guitar feels amazing to play and offers up tons of great tones. Eventually I'll probably swap the electronics out for an EMG 81/60 setup and put the Sustainiac system into one of my frankenstein guitar builds to have on hand for recording purposes.
