Roland FANTOM-06 Inputs and Outputs

Limitless Expression

FANTOM-06 is geared toward players who enjoy modding their sound via levers or wheels, as well as those who prefer external pedals. Using the mic input, a 32-band vocoder allows for a vast world of vocal manifestations, from VP-style ensemble tones and robot voices to surreal textures and more. There’s also a dedicated USB port for connecting a MIDI controller—with the FANTOM-0 series, there’s no limit to the types and combinations of expression available.

Roland is known for giving musicians freedom to explore their creativity, and FANTOM-06’s ability to easily create long, evolving passages, modular-style animated textures and sounds with customizable articulation, makes this 61-key synth no exception. With two LFOs per partial and four partials per tone—plus the ability to stack 16 tones—FANTOM-06 can provide up to 128 LFOs per voice. And for sequencing, step LFOs are possible with 16 steps of beat-synced automation and 35 curve choices per step.

fantom menace

It's a good all around machine for sketching out songs and ideas, sort of a jack of all trades. The sound library has just about any instrument/sound texture you could want, the synth parameters are pretty adjustable if you're into sculpting sounds (2 VCOs, a filter, ADSR envelope, various routing options and effects, etc), the sequencer is easy to use. The user manuals are pretty helpful and Roland has some good online tutorials There are 16 'zones', which are essentially tracks. And since the unit is meant for live performances each setup lives in a 'scene'. Such that for a live performance you would designate each scene as song and then chain them together to make a set list. Overall I'm enjoying it. The one downside where it's not a DAW/MPC killer is the 'sample" pads. Out of the box they sort of exist separate from the tracks, so they don't have all the functionality you would expect if you're used to an MPC, namely time stretching samples to your song, but they did make some improvements over the last fantom so there are some work arounds though. It's light and feels quality built. Overall I would recommend it.

Keybed and piano sounds are a little disapointing

I currently have a Korg M50 and was looking to upgrade. I was torn between a Roland Fantom 06 and Yamaha MODX6+. Per my research, the Roland just seemed like it would be a better keyboard. When it arrived, I was very pleased with the layout. I would give it a 5+ for its ease of use and functionality. It's so intuitive and well designed! I think it's the best out there at this price point. However, for me, the major drawback was the keybed. It was pretty stiff. I know at this price point, you aren't going to find a great keybed. That said, I would probably give it a 1 star compared to other keyboards in this price range. Also, the piano sounds were a little lackluster. I tried EQ'ing the tones, but I just couldn't dial them into my satisfaction. Unfortunately, the piano tones appear to be a complaint with other musicians as well. That said, if you have been using Roland keyboards, then I am sure it wouldn't be an issue for you. Believe me, I really wanted to like this keyboard. The superior layout, functionality, connectivity are just awesome! However, keybed and piano sounds were just uninspiring to me. So, I returned it and got a Yamaha MODX6+. If the MODX6+ had the Roland layout, it would be the top selling keyboard. Anyhow, I love my MODX6+

It's good keyboard. Beside programming the style, I wish pre programmed styles in the keyboard would better. So, you can play pre programmed or if you want to program you can create your own.

This is everything you could want in a keyboard/synthesizer. It has a built in DAW software for creating full songs with easy to understand settings and utilities all on a touch screen, as well as so many videos on YouTube for people like myself who aren't very tech savvy for the price it's everything you could want and more. #Sweepstakes

This is a replacement for a Korg Kronos (that was just too heavy to keep bringing to shows. Easy to program and sounds awesome.

This machine is great. There are so many capabilities in it that it's mind blowing. I had a used one that went on the fritz and I returned it for a new one and it works like a dream. My favorite part is being able to get hands-on with zen-core synthesis. The touch screen and the knobs below it along with the synth ctrl section make it easy to go deep into synthesis. The only thing that I don't like is the organization of the user banks for uploading Roland Cloud sounds. #sweepstakes

    A few questions actually:

1) Does the ability of the Fantom to function as USB audio interface mean that as long as it's connected to a computer that has speakers connected it doesn't itself need speakers hooked up to hear it?

2) Does the USB Audio interface function require Windows 10? (I have 7 and would rather not update until I know all my software is compatible with it)

3) Can it resample patterns you play plus FX? For example, could I play a piano loop bit crushed or distorted & then sample it to be triggered from a pad?

That is correct. That means it doubles as an interface which means that you can connect it directly to a computer. I am showing that it does require Windows 10, and yes you can piano loop and sample it back with effects.
