Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Professional Monitor Headphones

Description
Audio-Technica's ATH-M40x wired headphones set the standard for professional on-the-go monitoring. Designed for audio engineers, producers, podcasters and musicians, the ATH-M40x provides a balanced, articulate listening experience to make well-informed mix decisions. At the heart of their performance are proprietary 40 mm neodymium drivers that reproduce the full audible frequency range with pinpoint accuracy.
Superior Isolation for Focused Listening
The ATH-M40x's circumaural design contours comfortably around the ears to seal out ambient noise. Their closed-back earcups prevent sound bleed, allowing you to monitor tracks with minimal distraction even in loud environments. Sonic details are rendered with stunning clarity, giving you the ability to make subtle tweaks that transform a good mix into a great one.
Maximum Flexibility for Life on the Go
Take the ATH-M40x anywhere with their included detachable cables and collapsible design. A straight cable and coiled cable are provided for stationary and portable use. The earcups fold flat and inward to slip neatly into the included carrying pouch, ready to accompany you to gigs, recording sessions or anywhere else your craft takes you. Their lightweight yet durable construction delivers hours of fatigue-free comfort.
Single-Side Cable Exit Offers Convenient Monitoring
A single-side cable exit allows the ATH-M40x's left earcup to swivel for easy one-ear monitoring—essential for DJing, live sound engineering or anytime you need to tune in to your environment. The earpads' large size and premium memory foam fill conform naturally to the shape of your ears, achieving a perfect seal for maximum isolation without uncomfortable pressure points.

These are good for music production and have extra perks
I bought these because my previous studio monitor headphones, the Sony MDR-7506, were louder on one side than the other. These Audio Technicas have no such imbalance as far as I can tell. The thin pleather ear pads of the Sonys were falling apart too, a common issue with those 'phones. The ATH-M40x sound relatively neutral, which is good for mixing. They're neither too bassy nor too bright. As a hobbyist producer, I like the flat frequency response, sound quality, and detail of these 'phones. Aside from sound, there are also some other nice features. The earcups swivel and fold. The cable is detachable, so if it breaks you can just replace it. It won't render the whole headphones useless. For me, one drawback is the headband is tight. If you wear glasses, you really have to fiddle with the headphones to make them less uncomfortable. I haven't had these long enough to see how well they hold up over the long haul, but so far they're great for my purposes.

A big disappointment !
I use the headphones for recording. I have an old (almost 20 years) pair of M40X's and they sound great still. The new ones sound and look cheap, by comparison. There seems to be a Bass Boost, not the flat response that one chooses the M40X for. The foldability and detachable cord seem to be things that would shorten the lifespan rather than enhance the experience. (The last new pair I bought I returned because I only got sound in one ear.) All in all I would call the new ones a deterioration rather than an improvement. I'm glad I kept my old ones.

These are amazing. It was a gift for my husband and he absolutely loves them. He uses them to make music and the sound quality is perfect. Highly recommend.
Best sound, but so uncomfortable

They have the best sound (to me) under $200, crystal clear with the perfect amount of bass. Unfortunately the clamping force is way too high and the ear cups are uncomfortable - returned them as I could keep them on my head for more than 30 minutes.

With audio Technica headphones 40's cord plug into my fender ? Same jack as guitar.. thanks bug's
No. It would need some type of amp to produce the sound for the headphones. We do offer headphone amps that plug in to the guitar that you can plug the headphones into.submitted7 years ago
