Akai Professional
Description
The Akai MPD18 MIDI Pad Controller is an easy way to add genuine MPC pads to your setup. This MIDI-over-USB pad controller for DJs, programmers, producers, and other musicians is built around the pads and controls from Akai Professional's industry-standard MPC series. The MPD18 is an expressive and intuitive instrument ideal for the studio and stage.

At the heart of the Akai MPD18 is its bank of 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive MPC pads, an Akai Pro exclusive. You can access 3 different banks of sounds from the MPC pads for a total of 48 sounds at your fingertips. The MPD18 also borrows the MPC series' assignable Q-Link controllers, enabling you to control nearly any parameter in your software in real time. You get an assignable Q-Link fader for natural, hands-on control of your most used parameters, and MPC Note Repeat enables you to quickly input patterns such as hi-hat parts or drum rolls. The MPD18 also has 16 configurable presets so you can program it for the way you work with different hardware and software.

The Akai MPD18 sends MIDI information over its plug-and-play USB interface so you can use it with your Mac or PC without installing any drivers. The USB connection even powers the MPD18 so the included USB cable is all you need for portable production. It can control nearly any MIDI software, as well as MIDI hardware, such as synths, sound modules, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, and more.

Very easy to use. Great for setting up your own home studio. The MDP Pad controller arrived within 48 hours of ordering it. It was brand new in original packaging and has worked great. Thanks for a great addition on my home studio.

I am a long time user of the Ableton Live software, and have been gradually expanding from the keyboard and mouse to midi control devices. This is the first controller-only midi pad device I have purchased and I am very impressed. The whole thing is very sleek and solid, and grips very well to a desk even when you are slamming it pretty hard. The 'full level' feature is incredibly handy. I installed the software before ever plugging it in, but without any fiddling around in the software control panel Ableton recognized it immediately and it gave me no trouble as I tried it out on a drum rack and several VST plugins. My only gripe is that as of yet I am unable to get the device tempo to sync up with the tempo in Ableton, this is only a minor complaint as the note repeat function is not something I have use for very often. It lacks any knobs to control effects, filters, etc... but for $99 it is still a fantastic value.

This controller is fantastic! I have been using it in a lot of ways in the past 2 weeks: lauching clips in Live, playing drums, and even setting the pads to play various scales which is very helpful to come up with a melody over your chords. My only complaint will go to the design of the pads. Out of the box, the pad response is poor and turns barely acceptable with the "Full level" button on. However, the device is simple enough to take apart and you can add electrical tape to close the gap between the sensors and the pads, thereby drastically improving the pad response.

For those of you looking for a simple midi controller to make nice drum beats or whatever, this is money well spent. I've been using a keyboard to bang out beats for a few years now and within the 1st few minutes of hitting the pads on the MPD18 I was more than satisfied. This is nice and compact and very lightweight so it can go anywhere. I've found that it's easier without all the bells and whisles of the other controllers as well. 4 banks would have been better but it's all good. Keepin' it simple works better sometimes!

I got this a freebee with EZ Drummer so you know this was a great deal. What I didn't expect was the solid construction, programmable keys and the ability to use it like a keyboard. I gave away my Korg Microkey and use this as my on the road midi controller.
