Tips for using the RØDE smartLav on iOS and Android

RODE

collapse expand iconDescription

The smartLav+ is a broadcast-grade wearable microphone designed for use in a wide range of film, television and broadcast scenarios, or wherever broadcast quality audio is required in a discreet, portable format without the complication and expense of additional wireless equipment.

With the smartLav+ the user simply mounts the microphone on the talent, connects it to a smartphone or tablet headset jack and records via the RØDE Rec app for iOS, or any other audio app of their choice.

By employing a professional quality omni-directional condenser capsule the smartLav+ picks up sound equally from all around the microphone, allowing for versatility when mounting and ensuring a high degree of user-friendly operation.

A foam pop shield is supplied to minimize wind noise and vocal plosives (hard ˜b', ˜t' and ˜p' sounds), as well as a durable mounting clip with in-built cable management. Its Kevlar reinforced cable ensures that you never stretch or snap your microphone under normal usage conditions.

The smartLav+ is compatible with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection, however it has been designed to pair perfectly with R˜DE's RØDE Rec app for Apple iOS devices. RØDE Rec turns the user's iOS device into a fully-featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalisation presets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app.

I wanted to use this to create videos of myself with quality sound, using a tripod to take the video. The cord on this mic is only about 3 feet long, making it useless for this purpose. This short of a cord would only work for recording audio, or taking video of someone else while being very close to them. If the product description said 3 feet, I never would have purchased this. Why would this not be a prominent part of the description?

I wanted to use this to make videos with better sound. The mic cable is far too short to have the cellphone camera used for the videos, making it useless. This seems to be made only for voice recordings, or very close up videos. It would have been good to know the length of the cable before buying it, but it was not listed anywhere.

  • I actually just bought my second one

This Rode smartLav+ sounded very crisp & clear. For this little device delivered quality sound I was surprise by it. I am totally willing to pay for this smartLav+ Lavalier Microphone even thought it's pricey! However, Guitar Center will do a price match so I was able to get it below the MSPR price.

I am a videographer doing primarily weddings. I have done three in the last two weeks and have found created very reliable. The most recent was actually a 50th Anniversary and the groom didn't speak because of a stroke. The couple was mostly seated at the alter of the church. They had a drape of the two chairs on which they were seated. I watched the mic between the couple on the drape. It picked the bride and the pastor quite well include the readers a few feet away on the house sound system. Ian very satisfied for the price.

I use this with my iPhone 6 for Periscoping (live broadcasting over the phone) and it works wonderfully. Improves the sound and makes you more professional. Great product for the price. Wireless are nice but cost a lot more.

I purchased a ZOOM H1N to record Board Meetings of a Home Owners Association. Would this Mic be a good option to capture all the audio in the meeting? The meetings are held in our clubhouse and attendance is usually from 50 to 100 people.

This would be an alright choice, but since it's a board meeting I would assume there would be more than 1 person talking at a time. If that's the case I would recommend maybe getting a couple of mics.
