Pigtronix

collapse expand iconDescription

The Pigtronix Philosopher’s Gold compression effects pedal is a variation on the original Philosopher's Tone, featuring the same optical sustain engine with the addition of a layer of germanium-enhanced distortion. The unique diode arrangement found in the Philosopher's Gold delivers a smooth top end and rich midrange response, tailored to match the characteristics of the optical sustainer driving it. The clean side of the Philosopher’s Tone remains the same—dial in your Blend and Volume to get your desired signal, and Sustain for compression. What defines Germanium Gold is the Grit control. More than a simple gain knob, Grit acts a blend for the supreme germanium-enhanced distortion folded into the unit.

Using it clean gives a nice smooth tone with the sustain an 3oclock

I ordered it, and when It arrived, it was broken. Big Sad. Did a return, got a new one, and I really like the new one. Sounds good with or without the grit Before I got it, the videos I saw used humbuckers; so I was glad to find it also sounds great with a strat.

I have had a Boss Compression/Sustain pedal for a few years and I was never impressed. I kept hearing people say a compression pedal is a necessary pedal and I couldn't figure out why from the Boss pedal. I bought the Philosopher's Gold in hopes it would be what I thought a Comp/sustain pedal should be and it did not disappoint. I got it yesterday and ended up playing for hours because I was so impressed. I am most impressed with the sustain! The germanium feature is awesome too. I highly recommend this pedal!!!

I have multiple pedal boards tailored for the multiple bands I play in. My classic rock band pedal board was lacking a compressor. I have a Kelley 2 knob and a Dynacomp on my other two boards. I'm stacking this compressor in front of an MXR Timmy and an Analogman Prince of Tone. The compression settings are straight forward and useful. The blend control gives it additional flexibility to mix dry and compressed signal. The addition of a germanium boost allows you to dial in some subtle but effective grit. Used by itself and in combination with the two stacked drive pedals allow me a wide variety distortions and boosts. It's a good value (even better as a sdod), sounds decent, takes up little space and seems sturdy. Good.

  • Great Pedal, not quite my thing

This is a fantastic little pedal. The germanium drive gives it a slightly aggressive sound, that isn't quite my thing, but others might find it perfect. Construction quality is superb. Absolutely worth the money. Compression has wide range, from not noticeable to way too much. It's smaller than I expected, so it can fit on a cluttered pedalboard.
