A Great Buy
I bought this black birch snare to use with my strata black birch Pearl VSX drum set as an alternative snare along with the metal Sensitone snare that came with my kit. There is space visible between the hoop and the rim of the head looking from the top. I was thinking of returning it and getting another one but instead I replaced the Protone head with an Evans ST Dry batter head, tuned it up using a tension watch, and that solved the problem. It sounds great now. I've never used a birch snare before; the sharp woody tone sounds fabulous. It kicks butt!

Eh
Definitely not a high quality snare... I got one with my set, and already some of the snares have broken off, and it has the most annoying ring if you hit it anywhere but dead center. If its all you can afford, it can be endured, but I recommend saving your money.

Great birch snare. I'm using a Remo fiberskyn and 1 moon gel and it's killer sounding now. Not too much ring and cracks/pops very nicely when struck.
Does not take a rim shot well

It's a fine cheap snare.. That said it takes a few good rim shots and the lugs are loose on that stroked side constantly. It's annoying
Needed an upgrade. I'd recommend it.

I bought this drum because it was cheap and it was Pearl and I liked the looks of the snare strainer, which didn't disappoint me. Put an Aquarian black head on top, and I'm not disappointed in the sound. I own 27 snare drums, so it's not something I use every day, and I prefer drums made out of metal other than steel.. This drum is bright, has good volume and holds it's own against maple snares I paid more than twice the price for - the Pearl produces more sound and tone. Although I have not played this drum a lot, I can confidently recommend it to anyone on a budget. I sincerely doubt you will find anything better in this price range. .
