Description

The dbx 286SVVM is a full-featured single-channel strip with Compressor/Expander/Gate/De-esser/Enhancer which offers up a studio-quality microphone/instrument preamplifier with four processors that can be used independently or in any combination. The sonically pristine dbx 286SVM Mic Preamp has all the features you need, including wide-ranging input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power and an 80Hz high-pass filter to remove low frequency hum, rumble or wind.

The 286SVVM comes with dbx's OverEasy compressor so you can transparently smooth out uneven acoustic tracks or deliver the kind of in-your-face vocal performance that dbx compressors are known for. Eliminate vocal sibilance and high-frequency distortion from other instruments, such as cymbals, with its frequency-tunable De-Esser. You can also fine-tune the Enhancer HF Detail control to add sparkle and crispness to your tracks and make adjustments to the LF Detail control to add fullness and depth to vocals and bass instruments while cleaning up the muddy low midrange frequencies. You can also separate threshold and ratio controls on the 286SVVM's Expander/Gate, allowing you to subtly reduce headphone leakage or radically gate noisy guitar amps.

There's really nothing else like it. Simply put, the most versatile all-in-one voice processor / preamp on the market. A truly professional product, thousands of broadcast radio stations around the world trust the 286s to make their on-air talent sound amazing. The idea that you can find gear of this quality for a few hundred bucks is mind boggling. You can quite literally achieve any sound your looking for, ever in untreated environments. Broadcasters, podcasters, VO artists, narrators... anyone who works with a microphone needs one of these. Sounds fantastic with my EV RE320. I could spend an entire day trying to describe why the 286s is so great, but you really need to hear it to appreciate what it can do for you. Thankfully there are dozens of review / demo videos to be found. Just google "dbx 286s setup" and prepare to be amazed!

  • Very nice. The effect is subtle in a good way

The effect is subtle, but there (may depend on your settings). I like that because it gives me more of that radio voice, but it's hard to tell that effects are applied. It also sounds like I have way more sound treatment in my room (both as a result of this device and my mic, an RE20) than I actually do. My room''s sound treatment is actually really bad. Can be a minor con: this doesn't seem to be as fine-tuned as control as more dedicated devices, but in my case, I like the simple controls. Also, this thing is quite wide thanks to it being designed for a rackmount

How does this compare to an ART Tube MP Studio Microphone Preamp matches with a Shure SM7B for voiceovers and vocals? It's about 120$ difference and see is it worth it.
