From Zoom, a leader in handy recording devices, comes the H5 Handy recorder. This compact yet powerful recorder is designed for musicians, journalists, podcasters and anyone who needs to capture high-quality audio on the go. The H5 comes with an advanced XYH-5 mic capsule with a shockmount to minimize vibration, providing two matched unidirectional mics for stereo recording with a wide range. For more options, the H5 is compatible with the interchangeable capsules for the H6 recorder to suit any recording need.

Capture Pristine Audio Anywhere

With the ability to record in 24-bit/96kHz, the H5 produces professional quality recordings rivaling studio equipment. The preamps, also found in the H6, ensure stunningly clear audio. For loud environments, the H5 can handle up to 140dB SPL without distortion. Whether recording a solo instrument, an on-location interview or a live rock show, the H5 collects high-definition audio in any situation.

Long-Lasting Power for Extended Recording

While other recorders require frequent battery changes or AC power, the H5 keeps going for over 15 hours on just two AA batteries. For lengthy sessions, the optional AC adapter provides constant power. With a 32GB SD card, the H5 can record for up to 70 hours without interruption. For extra peace of mind, the backup-record function creates a separate safety track in case the main recording peaks.

A Versatile Tool for Recording and Beyond

In the studio or field, the H5 serves many purposes. It operates as a 4-track recorder, capturing two stereo tracks or four mono tracks. For video use, the H5 connects directly to your camera. It also functions as a USB audio interface with zero-latency monitoring, allowing you to record directly to your computer. Onboard effects like compression, limiting and low-cut filtering put the final polish on your recordings. And with support for WAV and MP3 formats, you can choose between maximum quality or smaller file sizes.

Portable and Practical

Measuring just over 6" long and weighing under 10 ounces with the included battery, the H5 is a convenient size for portability. The 1.9" LCD display provides an easy interface for navigating menus and ensuring proper levels. Physical buttons for recording, track arming, playback and more provide tactile control. A USB port allows file transfer and a line out sends your audio to external devices. For protection, a hard case is available separately. Zoom H5

I do a lot of location audio and when I was looking for a new recorder, after the headphone jack on my last one broke, I remembered that Zoom had some new ones out. When I first held it, you could feel how sturdy it was, and how easy everything was to reach with one hand. There was definitely a lot of though going into this design. I have had the recorder a little over a week, and have used it for just about every application you might need it for, volume wise and the sound is crystal clear. I used it for a 4 person interview(two booms and the H5 as a stereo mic) and the H5 on-board mic sounded great along with the booms. I used it as an interface for recording an a cappella song and it didn't miss a beat. I had to record ambiance from a dining hall at a summer camp, and we all know how loud those can be, and it did not distort even when a kid screamed into the mic for fun. Which proves also that the on-board compressors and limiters work like a dream. I made the right choice.

Good, but have had some issues

- onboard mics seem to pick up a low-level operating hum - not loud, but definitely perceptible if using to pickup lower-level signal sources like a choir. - not sure whether it was a flaky SD card or low batteries, but I had 2 hours of recording rendered useless because the recording files (both primary and -12db backup) had dropouts of several seconds in length every 5-10 seconds. The SD card tested as good on both quick and full tests, both before the recording, after the recording, and after a reformat. Low-fi videorecorder audio saved the day. The batteries had about 5 hours of runtime on them, but were reading as ok. Realtime monitoring during the event did not exhibit the dropouts, but playback of the recorded files just after the event on the H5 did. Lesson-learned: Record some test sound for a minute beforehand, play it back, and use fresh batteries. - The built-in mics are VERY sensitive to wind! I would use the foam windscreen even indoors, on the off chance that somebody is breathing nearby or you are standing in the airstream of ventilation. Outdoors, you MUST use the windscreen, no matter how little wind there is - even walking with the unit at 1-2 mph generates enough "wind" to get picked up if you leave the windscreen off. - I wish there were indicator lights for peak level and recording on the back end - I often use it mounted on top of my videocamera, and I can't doublecheck levels or that I remembered to press "record" without moving the camera down a couple feet so I can peek at the top of the Zoom.

I use this at band practice and it is way better than just using a cell phone! Sound clarity and presence is much better. The entire band loves using this tool. Strongly recommend for anyone wanting better sound quality than a cell phone microphone. Great for capturing live shows!!!!!

Been a few devices I've bought over the years that were so much better than expected I'd gladly pay double the original price if I had to replace them. Original Canon 5D and the Bose L1 w/ToneMatch come to mind, and I'd add the Zoom H5 for sure. Crazy good sound and versatility for the money. Solid build. Standard XY mic is clean and very versatile, surprisingly good for vocals. Echo the people who recommend the windscreen though, can't even run a ceiling fan without it. H6 would be great but 2 line inputs was enough for us. We LOVE this thing.

  • Great for standalone recording but NOT A GOOD INTERFACE

I am an audiobook narrator and have been using this device as a standalone recorder. The preamps are great and the sound quality is excellent. However, there is a noticeable degradation in the sound quality when using this device in interface mode. I contacted Zoom support and they confirmed there is a hardware issue that creates a warble effect when using the device in interface mode that effects the recording wuality. I was told this is only an issue with the H5 model. If you are using this as a standalone recorder it sounds amazing but if you are a professional trying to use this device in interface mode you will be disappointed.

So far, I have used the Zoom H5 for nature recording. The clarity is amazing. I'm waiting on mics to arrive, but I was astounded by the XY mics it came with. I was very impressed. One thing to note using the mics, it picks up handling noise from just holding the Zoom. It is very sensitive! While I wait for my mini boom stick, I attacked the unit to a mini tabletop tripod for use while holding it in the field. Problem solved and no handling noise! I'm also an amateur musician. I have not yet tried any multiteack recording, but I'm sure this does just great and can surely work for ambient room recordings as well. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied and love this thing!

Incredible upgrade from Tascam DR40. Since I needed an audio interface feature now that most of my work is through video chat.

  • Great sound, even if hard to figure out at first

I needed a very portable second recorder to supplement my Roland R-05, for live choir performances. For such events, I don't need bulky equipment, nor do I need more than four channels--I normally use only two, the internal mics--and I do all of my audio mixing on my computer, so in-unit mixing abilities are not a decision factor for me. This unit's reviews, across several vendors, topped those of the upgraded Roland models R-07 and R-26, as well as the Zoom H6. So, I took the risk with the H5. Out of the box, it was difficult to figure out, because it was not intuitive to have to press the rocker switch in, in order to select from a menu (for example, to choose my default recordings specs). It took me several minutes of searching through the manual to get it, as even the manual doesn't bring out that fact at once. Once I could finally set it up the way I prefer, I did some initial testing. I set the unit on my bed covers, thinking that would sufficiently dampen any vibration for my testing. When I copied the test audio files onto my PC, I noticed a great deal of noise during silent parts, so I began to doubt. I then took it to a live concert situation and set it up so the unit was sitting on a folded towel, with the internal mics hanging over the edge. When I got home and checked those files, I was pleasantly surprised, as the silent parts were quiet and the music parts were crisp. I suspect that during my first tests, the internal mics were actually touching the bed covers, causing the noise. It seems that as long as the mics are hanging in open air, the shock mounts do their job extremely well. So, I give this unit a 5 for sound quality, but a 3 in intuitive initial usability. (Once you get it figured out, it is easy to use.) In addition, the batteries seem to last a shorter time than I expected (compared to the R-05), but the sound quality makes up for that.

Hey, I was wondering if I was able to use a lavalier microphone with the H5 Zoom? And which lavalier would you recommend?

This handy recorder would not be compatible with a lavalier microphone.
