Intuitive Interface With Large Backlit Display

The SPD-SX features a large backlit LED screen that makes navigating settings and programs simple. Easily customize kits, samples, effects and more with dedicated buttons and value knobs. The SPD-SX's interface is intuitive to understand right out of the box, allowing you to start creating and performing quickly.

Multi-Effects Engines Provide Real-Time Modification

The SPD-SX includes three simultaneous multi-effects that can be used for real-time modification of your samples. Choose from a variety of effects like filters, pitch shifter, delay, reverb and more to manipulate your sounds during a live performance or studio session. Tweak parameters of the multi-effects to create truly unique sounds tailored to your music.

Sample and Playback Audio of Any Source

Easily capture audio from any source using the SPD-SX's audio inputs and onboard sampling features. Sample from a microphone, audio interface or even a turntable thanks to the sampling pad's 1/4" audio input. The SPD-SX supports both WAV and AIFF audio file formats for added flexibility. Playback your samples with the SPD-SX's responsive trigger pads and modify sounds in real time using the multi-effects engines and interface controls.

Dynamic Sounds and Internal Drum Kits

In addition to its sampling capabilities, the SPD-SX includes a variety of dynamic sounds and drum kits that are ready to play right out of the box. Choose from acoustic drum and percussion sounds as well as electronic tones. Easily layer additional sounds on top of kits using the SPD-SX's sampling features for an unlimited range of combinations. FINALLY! a pad that does what I need it to

This is the pad I've been waiting for.. for the last year or so I've been acting as both drummer and DJ for the hip hop project Earth Amplified, so I experimented with the original SPD-S, the SPD-30, and the Alesis Control Pad (used controlling ableton live), and have been frustrated with serious drawbacks on all of them: no sample loading on the SPD-30, memory shortage and having to use outdated flash cards to on the SPD-S, and bad phantom triggering problems on the Control Pad. I haven't been able to test it on stage yet, but after spending only about a day working with the SPD-SX, I am already so stoked to (and relieved!) that they finally made a pad with the flexibility necessary for real deal modern situations.

Just not good at anything

I don't know what the SPD-SX is supposed to be. I loved the SPD-S because I could load my own samples, create quantized phrases, use a foot pedal or velocity to switch between waves on pads, and more. It's an old device, so it only had 512mb of memory with limits on the size per sample, number of samples...etc. The SPD-SX is a newer device and it does not have the memory limits, but it doesn't do any of the other stuff I listed above. After about 10 hours with it, it's clear that it is just a machine for backing tracks. Roland has gutted every useful feature from the original, but kept the bad feeling pads. They added FX, but that's pretty useless without the other features. If you're considering this for a drum pad, just get the SPD-30. It feels great and has a ton more functionality that makes it work as drum kit. If you just need backing tracks, get the SPD-30 and your computer or some other sampler. The midi implementation on the SPD-30 gives you two notes per pad that can change based on velocity or pedal, so you get 16 per kit plus external triggers and with the 3-track looper, you can use 3 different kits to control 3-different pieces of outboard gear. I returned the SPD-SX and bought another SPD-30. Roland sure is blowing in the wind. Every now and then they make magic (SPD-S, SPD-30), but they either don't know it or don't care because after making something amazing, their very next release can be gimped garbage. That's what the SPD-SX is.

    i wanted to have a drum pad for so long that i had money to buy it and it works. its so good for concerts and will work and will be good if you don't have a drum kit!

    How much fun is this thing?! I'm not a drummer, but it definitely has helped me get in tune with grooves and start drumming. I also will be using it for solo gigs, to take advantage of the sampling. I love that you can add in your own samples and get creative with how you use them!

    I probably wouldn't have bought it had I researched more about the lack of quantization. Outside of using it as a midi controller for different daw's, it won't sync time clock. There are work arounds if you want to use this for backtracks, but not as easy as it could be. The extra trigger ins work great. This unit is still a beast. I love it!

    Do I have to adjust the tempo for every song, or can I set it up so that I can cycle through the tempos?
