Description

The SPD-SX Special-Edition sampling pad puts powerful sample creation and playback under your sticks with innovative audio-capturing features, expressive playability, three multi-effects engines and much more. The perfect addition to any acoustic or electronic drum kit, percussion setup, DJ booth or keyboard rig, the SPD-SX is equally at home on the live stage, in the recording studio, pre-production suite or dance club.

Since the original SPD-SX's introduction, it has become an industry standard used by musicians and producers in every musical style. Whether you're firing off one-shot samples, looped phrases or complete audio playback tracks, the SPD-SX-SE is loaded with the latest technology and tools to get the job done with speed, precision and convenience. Enjoy the most advanced triggering and sampling technology in a sleek, easy-to-use percussion instrument. The SPD-SX-SE augments the standard SPD-SX with a striking metallic red case, red-accented function knobs and a greatly expanded internal sampling memory.

The Playing Field

The SPD-SX-SE is equipped with nine highly sensitive rubber pads with two independent real-time control knobs and four dedicated effect buttons. Roland’s most advanced triggering technology ensures the ultimate in accuracy and fully dynamic performance, while a large backlit LCD provides easy-to-read data in all varieties of environments. Each pad has a companion LED that illuminates to show the pad’s status. When you trigger sample phrases, the LEDs remain lit to show you which pads are in play and which are not. In addition, the LEDs change illumination strength according to audio-level activity (similar to level meters on a mixing board). The high-contrast red divider lines help you see the pad zones clearly on stage.

Improved Playability and Functionality

Today, increasing numbers of drummers and percussionists need to incorporate audio samples into their performance. The SPD-SX-SE will satisfy their increasing requirements with essential features, such as individual click output routing, dedicated volume controls, Pad Check function, individual Sub Out and more.

Onboard Effects

The SPD-SX-SE has three multi-effects units onboard: one master unit and two units that are assignable per kit. The master effects engine lets you perform in real time like a DJ using the dedicated front-panel controls. Get your hands on the filter, delay, short looper and user-assignable effect—all of which can be creatively adjusted with the four front-panel buttons and two control knobs.

Multi-Pad Sampling

There’s much more to the SPD-SX-SE than meets the eye. A powerful-yet-friendly lineup of features has been built into this little powerhouse, such as Multi-Pad Sampling. While audio streams in from an external audio player or computer (via Audio In or USB), simply strike each pad at the appropriate start/end points, and the sample will be automatically truncated and assigned to that pad. It’s a fast, friendly way to create multi-sampled phrases and pad maps.

SPD-SX Wave Manager Software Included

The SPD-SX-SE's generous internal memory (16GB) lets you store and carry a massive sample library inside. With no external memory required, you can house approximately 3,000 minutes (50 hours) of audio at 16-bit, 44.1kHz, mono. The built-in USB ports let you directly import audio files from USB flash memory. The bundled SPD-SX Wave Manager software app lets you import audio files directly from computer via USB, assign the samples to each pad and organize the thousands of samples efficiently.

These are amazing. I got a decade out of my first one before one of the pads started getting intermittent, so I bought this one, and the old one is being serviced. When it's done, I'll have a backup!

I needed a compact E-kit for my gigs. I tried the Alesis Strike Multipad which failed on me twice so I bought this Roland SPD-SXse which does circles around the Strike. It's easier to use and functions very well without the Disco Lights. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Obviously most people who get this plays drums, but this is directed at those of you who have a keyboard rig. In my case a montage 8. Like many of you, I wanted a way to incorporate it with my keyboard, but also make more organic drum tracks on my studio compositions. I must say it is excellent on both parts! Digital drum beats can be too precise sometimes and of course you can slip some of the notes forward or backwards or incorporate groove into your beat making, but tapping your beats out on the fly and recording them into your DAW is priceless! Also with a couple of midi cables you can control your keyboard and sound your percussion samples/drums etc. on it or vice versa. Also you can line in and sample your keyboard and subsequently trigger these sounds for live settings or also for intricate studio arrangements. Possibilities are endless. I looked high and low across the Internet for some Propellerhead Reason compatibility, but found nothing. I spent days attempting different configurations to get it to work with Reason myself but did not, this was the only downfall but those of you who have Reason will understand how big of a downfall that really is. Perhaps I've missed some obscure functionality, but I don't think so. I guess you could control it from reason using the external device, but if you were like me- you dreamed of tapping out your beats while controlling the Reason drum kits. Over all, this was a very excellent purchase, and I settled for using it with my Apple Logic which communicates with the SPD-SX Beautifully. Peace
