GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer Overview

Description
Driven by Roland's proprietary digital processing technology, the GR-55 delivers lightning-fast tracking performance and previously impossible sound-making capabilities. It features two independent synthesizer sound engines, each loaded with over 900 of Roland's latest sounds, including pianos, organs, strings, vintage and modern synths, percussion and many more. A third sound engine is driven by Composite Object Sound Modeling (COSM), the guitar modeling technology behind Roland's famous VG-99 V-Guitar System. With COSM, the GR-55 can emulate electric and acoustic guitars, basses and other instruments, as well as guitar and bass amplifiers.
The GR-55 allows players to combine all three sound engines, plus their guitar's normal input, to create any sound from the familiar to the original. An independent multi-effects processor is available for a huge array of tone-shaping options, plus global reverb, chorus, delay effects and EQ to add final sweetening to any sound.
The GR-55 puts guitarists instantly in touch with a huge library of amazing sounds, with no editing required. The onboard lineup of ready-to-use presets takes the pain out of the process, from pop to rock and beyond, with quick-access category buttons. Creating and editing sounds is a breeze for guitarists as well, thanks to a large LCD display, simple front panel, and the intuitive EZ Edit and Sound Style features. Also, onboard is a phrase looper that lets players capture on-the-fly recordings with unlimited sound-on-sound style overdubs.
The GR-55 also features a USB song player that lets users play WAV files stored on USB flash memory, and song playback can be controlled with the onboard pedals. The GR-55 also functions as an audio/MIDI interface for computers, with a rear-panel USB 2.0 port for a quick and easy connection. Users can easily integrate with their favorite digital audio workstation software, recording GR-55 sounds as audio in the DAW and using the GR-55's super-fast pitch-to-MIDI capabilities to trigger MIDI sounds such as virtual synths and samplers with their guitar.
The GR-55 is equipped with Roland's industry-standard 13-pin GK interface. To access the GR-55's enormous palette of sounds, guitarists must use an instrument equipped with a GK-compatible pickup, such as Roland's GK-3 Divided Pickup, which is available with this GR-55. The GK-3 can be easily installed on most steel string guitars with no modification to the instrument. In addition, many different GK-ready instruments are commercially available from various top guitar manufacturers.

I think the trouble with doing a review before the product comes out is that we get a lot of miss information. Like the one about volume control of different instruments for live blending and mixing. Now that the manual is out for download we can get deeper into the workings and abilities of the GR-55. In fact the engineers created quite a bit of control for volume permitters both live and pre-programed. First off is the Volume pedal which can serve multiple functions. Besides the the fact that you can put a volume pedal on the separate modeled guitar out there is midi control for an expression pedal. Now the engineers also created what they call "Virtual expression pedal system (Internal Pedal / Wave Pedal) By assigning a desired parameter to the virtual expression pedal, you can produce an effect as though you were operating a physical expression pedal to change the volume or tone quality in real time. These can be triggered by 5 different realtime control devices coming from the GR-55 pedal board (2) and the GK3 controller (3). Five realtime controls should be more than enough even for experimental music. This is not including the preprogramed volume parameter controls But I think a lot of musicians may not dig that deep into it which I stopped counting after 100 parameters between effect, multis, pcm, and u-name there is a volume adjustment for it. I like to set these type parameters ahead of time for the sound that I'm using and the song that I'm using it for then program the order of the set list that the band is playing. This makes it possible for me to think less about foot gymnastics and more on the music and expression of it. To that end I could defiantly utilize the the GR-55 with the Virtual volume control, internal pedal and a pedal for the guitar only out. I think Roland has hit a home run with this unit by combining COSM + Multi FX + Synth Combis all in one pedal board. I have one on order (w/GC) and will review again after I've had time to set it up properly and choose the guitar that I will put it on probably the strat. So personally I'm not worried about the realtime expression abilities of the GR-55. The Creation Part is the fun part!!

I thought is was going to to a VG-8 + GR-20 in one simple unit
What happened to all of the beautiful guitar patches that Roland created with the VG-8? I've been using a VG-8 and a GR-20 together with a US-20 and I was hoping to simplify my live setup. I guess this is not going to happen. The guitar sounds in the new GR-55 are thin and just plain bad! The acoustic guitar and 12 string guitar unusable. Roland developed and duplicated some of the most beautiful guitar sounds on earth with the VG-8. What did they do with them? Did they lock them up or throw them away? Why can't they incorporate them into this new machine? I did notice that the tracking on the GR-55 is better than the GR-20, but the SAX and Organ sounds are not as good as the GR-20. I don't understand why anyone would want one of these. My 30 day trial is almost up and I need to return it to Guitar Center.

Roland GR-55 with GK-3 Divided Pickup is mind-blowing

As soon as you innocently dive into the Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer's vast functionality, you'll find yourself late for work, or that important meeting, or entirely missing dinner with your loved one who just left you seven voicemails because you couldn't hear through the heavenly noise. Its ability to track subtle dynamics and bends (once you take the few minutes to calibrate it to your specific axe) makes it feel like a natural extension of your guitar, rather than an awkward add-on. Its effects, models, and synths are musical and sound convincing, whether you're looking for realistic replicas, abstract tones, or anything in between. It has revolutionized the way I play, compose, and record music. The Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer opens up vast creative possibilities, which is exactly what the best tools should do. I put the included GK-3 Divided Pickup on my 2019 Player Strat. The things I can do now with a Strat defy all logic, so the best way to approach this is to do whatever comes into your head. Just make sure you're connected to your DAW and the record function is armed. You never know what inspired intuition is going bring out.

I'm just getting acquainted with this item, but I'm quite excited to explore. The various patches expand options very nicely. My initial thoughts: organizing the patches in the factory could have been done in a more guitar, user-friendly manner. The current system for changing patches during a song at a live gig does not seem as easy as I expected.

I'm using a 2019 Godin Multiac ACS SA Slim with its built-in 13-pin jack to connect to the Roland GR-55. I have the synth outputs feeding directly into 2 channels (stereo) on my UA apollo x6, plus the 1/4" jack from the guitar feeding into 1 other channel (mono) on the apollo x6. The Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer is mind-blowing and worth every penny. Its ability to track subtle dynamics and bends makes it feel like a natural extension of the guitar, rather than an awkward add-on. Its effects, models, and synths are musical and convincingly realistic replicas, abstract tones, and/or anything in between. It's added a lot of new colors to my music playing, composing, and recording. It opens up vast creative possibilities, which is exactly what the best tools should do.
I like it, but a pain to program

I've read before where somebody said there were a lot of useless patches, and I couldn't agree more. That said, being able to program everything to your liking makes it a little more palatable. However, it takes a while to learn how to program this thing because there are so many menus and sub menus. I have watched a lot of YouTube videos to try and figure this out because the manual doesn't really explain everything easily. It's like any Rowland manual, you just have to watch videos to figure some of the stuff out. I learn more every time I use it and it is very programmable and tweakable. I'm currently in the pink cloud phase of this thing because it's so new. The one thing that I don't really like is that you can't run a single output and have a clean guitar go to an amp. It has to go through this device first. what I mean by that is you can't get your guitar into the amplifier without running through this and using the modeling that it has to do that. Sometimes I just want to hear my Les Paul through my fender amp, but it doesn't work that way with a single output. This unit definitely has its issues, but for the price that I paid for it brand new, I really can't complain. I basically bought this thing for the brass section, but there are many other tweakable programs if you just take the time to do it. Again, it's a really steep learning curve for this thing unless you are wired to understand how this thing works.
I would buy this product again.

I upgraded from the GR - 33...how far this synthesizer has come! More voices, sturdier body. Great with a Godin guitar synthesizer.
Product Great, NO SOFTWARE to help change it (from Roland)

The unit is great, but in todays 2018 market, they should provide some software to program/change/add to it. It's like working in 1980 Roland world. If you don't want to take the time to learn the manual (slow) way to program changes, there is a Freeware program I found on the internet that works well, but Roland should take the time to provide such tools. Shame on them for an otherwise nice product!
