Phil Jones Bass

Description

PJB bass tone-to-go just got more portable and affordable with the Phil Jones Bass MICRO 7 combo. The MICRO 7 is a single-channel, 50 Watt bass combo with a 7” driver and 3” tweeter. It measures less than a foot on all sides and is only 15.5 lb.

The MICRO 7 uses the same high level of quality parts that musicians have come to expect on all PJB products. The goal was to achieve the highest in tone quality at an unbeatable price with the result being a combo that sounds amazing, and is compact enough to be used almost anywhere.

The MICRO 7 dimensions are 11.2" x 9.7" x 9.8" and will work on any AC voltage from 100 to 260 Volts without the need of a selector. Other features include Class D amplification, highly efficient and proprietary PJB 7-inch speaker and a 3” high frequency transducer, solid kick proof acoustically transparent curved steel grill, stereo headphone input, bass/mid/treble controls, auxiliary input and level control, and preamp line out. The frequency response is 36Hz -22KHz with a Signal to Noise Ratio Better than 84dB (EQ center, Volume on Full.)

Phil Jones Bass has been building bass amplifiers for the most demanding of bassists. Phil thought it was about time that a bass amp that delivered the true tone of a bass instrument, like you have never heard before with one major difference. It would be the most affordable bass amp yet. Phil Jones Bass engineers looked into the most efficient way they could build an amp without sacrificing the most important aspect: Tone!

The MICRO 7 uses the same high level of quality parts that musicians have come to expect on all PJB products. The goal was to achieve the highest level in tone quality at an unbeatable price with the result being the ultimate sounding practice amp for the home, and compact enough to go anywhere.

The one super high-efficiency and proprietary 7-inch speakers were designed by Phil Jones to get the most of the 50 watts class D amplifier. These amazing woofers are complimented by the company's high energy 3-inch high-frequency transducer. They have used this speaker in thousands of PA speakers and have proven to be blowout proof. The response of this speaker system is of the highest fidelity from 36Hz to 22KHz and that means it does not only sound great with bass but any instrument that plugs into it.

By using all digital circuitry, the amp will work on any AC voltage from 100 to 260 Volts without the need of a selector. Digital circuits are far more efficient than the old analog counterparts, and the benefit is less wasted power as heat, thus giving the amp a greater longevity. Heat is an amplifier's worst enemy since it slowly kills electronic components.

PJB did not skimp on quality of parts either; they just reduced down to the basic needs of most bass players. To ensure longevity PJB equipped this amp with a solid kick proof acoustically transparent, curved steel grill. This amp uses the same level of quality parts found on all PJB amps.

I have three electric bass guitars, a Markbass combo, and a this PJB. After ordering it online I waited with some doubt if I would be happy with such a small amp for more than $300. After I received it and tried it out I was wowed by it's smooth deep bass and fidelity. I think the tweeeter nicely bolsters the fidelity. It is particularly well made with quality materials. I bought it in early December 2021 and am still 100 percent pleased with it. If I really want to shake things up I use my Markbass combo. In other words, if you need a large amp then buy that. If you want an outstanding practice amp for any style of bass playing then this is it. By the way, much to my surprise, it sounds pretty good with a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul guitar too.

I wanted (needed) a bass practice amp in the bedroom for impromptu practice sessions. The wife was not going to allow a visible bass amp that would "make our bedroom look like a dorm room." Ah, women. So I looked for an amp I could completely hide under the bed (max 10" height). Not an easy find in a bass amp. Phil Jones to the rescue! Really the only amp I could find that fit the need. I didn't like the plastic nature of the Blackstar Fly 3 bass amp, the minimal power (3W), and the fact you can't physically hook a pair together (unless...Super Glue?). I'd love a Phil Jones Double Four, but too expensive for me for this particular situation. The Micro 7 is exactly what the doctor ordered. Great sound, nice low-end thump, and a 3" tweeter to allow full-range sound for play-along music. I use a Siri-controlled smart outlet to power it off and on. I never have to touch the amp itself. Just grab the cable end, plug into the bass, say "Siri, turn on amplifier," and start playing. Thanks Phil Jones! (And thanks Guitar Center.)

I saw PJB gear at the 2019 NAMM show and was impressed that their little amps could keep up with the roar of the show floor, so when this amp became available I thought I'd give it a shot and bought one from GC. This amp is a little gem for what it can do, and IMO is more thoughtfully featured and crafted than other amps in its price range. It has an independent Aux Input volume control, which is useful when I practice tunes on YouTube from my PC. It's compact, light, and instrument sound quality is excellent. It has a -10dB pad for active basses. I bought this amp only to practice tunes at home and had no expectation of using it for a live gig, since this is a small amp and for me, is volume-limited. As with any tiny amp, it's hard to hear definition when you place it on the floor and you naturally want to put it up closer to your ears. But, in doing so, the amp has to work harder to produce bass frequencies without the support of being close to the floor and walls. This causes distortion. It's at its best when placed in a corner with three boundary walls. I would guess this amp could keep up with one or maybe two acoustic guitars in a quiet setting, but probably not a drummer with an acoustic kit. The quality of sound from the Aux Input jack is thin compared with that of my HP low-end laptop playing through a quality table radio. But it has its own input volume control, so it's easy to balance the volume of the program material with the volume of the instrument. Overall Impression: A cool little high-fidelity bass amp that works well within the range of what it can do. If I had the chance to audition these amps side-by-side, I might have chosen the Double Four, which has a bit more power, and a more robust driver complement, but also costs significantly more. So, for the price, this is a good value. Note: I posted a more critical review earlier. After speaking with the manufacturer, who addressed my concerns quite seriously, I am now posting this revised one.

  • Not "loud enough to work with most drummers"

I saw PJB gear at the 2019 NAMM show and was impressed that their little amps could keep up with the roar of the show floor, so when this amp became available I thought I'd give it a shot. The Good: This amp is a little gem for what it can do, and IMO more thoughtfully featured and crafted than most other amps in its price range. It has an independent Aux input volume, which is useful when I practice tunes on YouTube from my PC. It's compact, light, and the vent in the back is designed to minimize vent noise. Sound quality is excellent and it has a -10dB pad for active basses. The Not-So-Good: I bought this amp only to practice tunes at home and had no expectation of using it for a live gig. What gets me is the promotional copy claims it's "loud enough to work with most drummers". NOT. Until I placed it on my desk in a corner with three boundary walls was it loud enough to keep up with my Boston Acoustics table radio. (I'm a baby boomer who performs in classic rock bands, mostly fingerstyle, no slapping.) As with any tiny amp it's hard to hear definition when you place it on the floor and you naturally want to put it up closer to your ears. But, in doing so, the amp has to work harder to produce bass frequencies without the support of being close to the floor and walls. This causes distortion, I would guess this amp could keep up with one or maybe two acoustic guitars in a quiet setting, but definitely not a drummer. Probably none of this would have been an issue if the manufacturer had not set expectations about the amp being able to keep up with most drummers. The quality of sound from the headphone jack is thin and grainy compared with that of my old HP low-end laptop. Overall Impression: This is a cool little bass amp that works well within the range of what it can do. If I had the chance to audition these amps side-by-side, I might have chosen the Double 4, which has double the power, but also costs significantly more. But, for the price, this is a good value
