MESA/Boogie Badlander Guitar Amplifier | Demo and Overview with Doug West

MESA/Boogie Badlander Guitar Amplifier | Demo and Overview with Doug West

Description

The Badlander 50 Guitar Tube Head from Mesa/Boogie delivers a trim sonic and weight profile while adding a distinct tonal character to the Badlander series. With an aggressive yet inviting sound, this Badlander head is ready to go where less output is needed. Two identical channels feature the same three dynamic and duplicated modes as its 100-watt counterpart with Clean, Crunch and Crush repeatedly supplying the gain and shaping power necessary to to navigate virtually any recording environment. The 2-channel preamp connects with two different power displacements that enhance everything from clean to clipped to wildly saturated. The 50-watt setting delivers bold authority and the highest headroom possible while the 20-watt setting unveils greater clipping potential and a mid-scooped, harmonic response that reveals trademark EL34 tone.

The Badlander 50 also features Mesa/Boogie's first onboard CabClone IR and delivers seamless DI with channel-specific IR assignment and a reactive load that sounds and feels great. The CabClone IR delivers flexibility, portability and a level of convenience previously only dreamed of—with the ability to go direct silently, or with the cab, for recording, stage or practice.

This is a high quality amp with many useful features. I bought it from GC two years ago and have mixed feelings. All of the online criticisms I founf to be accurate. It is bright and extremely mid focused and cannot be adjusted otherwise. It also has insufficient gain/saturation. It is better at full volume gigs and pedals help. However, I have now added the Legendary Tone mod and it now sounds fantastic. I am concerned about gig reliability with this large appendage coming from an extended tube socket. Maybe another version from Mesa would address this issue.

This amp is everything I loved about the original Mesa Dual Rec and none of the characteristics that I wasn't fond of (low end flub with higher gain settings). It's tighter, less fizzy, but still has that unmistakable Recto growl. The cab sim out is fantastic, too!
