Buy the MPH-2 if Guitar center has them in stock!!!
The Marantz MPH-2's are absolutely AWESOME. I have not heard anything that is capable of reproducing the bass accuracy that these things have. These head phones do a great job portraying the stage presence of bass, making me feel as if I actually have a (15" studio) subwoofer in my room, capable of hitting the lowest of notes with relative ease. Instead of placing the bass in a further back location from the highs and mids, (stereo wise like the sony MDR-7510's will tend to do), these headphones place the bass closer the the listener, making the bass easier to predict when monitoring with out a speaker/subwoofer setup. And the most important part... These are designed to be efficient, requiring less power (at an easy 300mW), which even my oldest running computer (7 years and running strong) has no problem driving. I'm sure you can use an amp, but you definitely don't need to have one to get a great experience with these. The one thing I must say, is that these must be broken in, as all studio headphones need to. I will play music at a low to moderate volume for about 8 or so hours (a shift at work) before I really give it a good listen. I notice the sound will clean up most after a solid 24 hours of music playing. I have been through four sets of headphones this month alone(all studio grade headphones, tascam TH-300X, Sony MDR-7510, and StatusAudio CB-1's) and this has been the process for each and every one. I found that every time I listened to the headphones, right out of the box, I could tell that they were just not "broken in" if you will. The clarity on the head phones is up to par, however the bass may make it a tad bit hard to hear if you are driving at low volumes. That is why I use these in conjuction with the CB-1's. These are my dedicated bass headphones, and the CB-1's are my dedicated high and mid headphones. I'll use the Sony's when mixing the tracks together, and I'll often find myself using these MPH-2 to verify bass output. These are rare already!

Built well, but sound is muddy.
I bought these simply because they were available at a terrific sale price and I needed a couple of spare studio headphones for recording and editing. I'm not someone who spends a lot of money on things just because they have a good label and I have been pleasantly surprised in the past with bargain products. This was not the case here. They are built well and comfortable, but the sound quality is poor. It literally sounds like they are packed with cotton as the sound is too heavy on the bass side and the clarity is poor. Yes, I could fiddle with EQ's to bring them up to speed, but when editing for recording, this just wont fly. They are getting returned.

I bought these headphones because I wanted to try my hand at mixing some songs in the place that I live in. It doesn't allow me to get loud doing things. These headphones were perfect for that purpose. Loud clear, comfortable, and precise. My favorite feature about them is that the cable detaches, meaning that the life of the phones is no longer determined by the sturdiness of the cable. You can just replace it. If I was going to say anything negative about them, I'd say that they're kind of bulky, and I don't think they'd be ideal for running on a treadmill or anything. But that's outside the parameters of what I use them for. I think they're just great!
I like my headphones very much. Nice product and price.

I have an odd question. About 18 years ago I purchased a Fender strat and hot rod amp from you guys. I no longer can find any of the documentation for the purchase. If I contact you with serial numbers can you provide any replacements? If not, no big deal.

An Audio Engineer friend turned me on to these. Great Headphones, and when they are on sale they are a fantastic deal! They sound amazing, and I've found that I can mix tracks accurately with them. The mixes sound consistently great when played on other systems. They are light weight and comfortable, and can be worn for hours. The cord is extra long and comes with a Velcro tie wrap to keep the excess under control when a long cord is not needed. The cord terminates with a 1/8th inch jack, and there is a 1/4 inch adapter that securely screws onto the mini jack, converting it to a full fledged 1/4 inch jack. If you should lose it, the mini jack will work with any adapter. These should take a moderate amount of abuse, but if you treat your gear with respect they should last a long time. The audio for the attached clip was recorded live with room mics in a tight stereo pair. I used these phones to make sure the sound was right on "Rise Up Again" before syncing the audio to the video and posting it on YouTube. The second link," Donald in Wonderland", was recorded and mixed entirely with these phones. Warning, it contains political satire so bring a sense of humor!
I've recorded well over 150 songs with these headphones

Digital drums at home and on stage as monitor for acoustic drums is the primary use of these headphones. Great set for the price. Plan to get a second pair.

Anybody know if they make a replacement cable for this model? Mine lasted a year and now it is having issues and cutting out when fully plugged into speaker, amp etc.

Is the jack for the headphones the same as headphones for a guitar amplifier or would it be like earbuds?
Both. This has the 3.5mm jack like earbuds but also comes with 1/4" adapter like the headphone jack on a guitar amplifier.
