M-Audio

Description

M-Audio pioneered the portable MIDI controller market with the Oxygen series of keyboard controllers, which now includes this Oxygen 49 MKIV model. Today, M-Audio continues to be a leader of this technology by developing intuitive controllers for software-based music production and performance. Thanks to continued innovation over the course of nearly a decade, the Oxygen series controllers offer more control, deep hardware/software integration, and come equipped with a reliable build that enables you to make music on the go or implement these controllers into any studio.

Streamlined Control
With an array of assignable knobs, pads and faders, Oxygen 49 MKIV gives you total control over your software, allowing you to stay engaged in the creative flow of recording and mixing music without ever reaching for the mouse. It features 49 velocity-sensitive keys for playing chords, bass lines, and melodies; eight assignable knobs for tweaking effect plugins and virtual instruments; eight velocity-sensitive pads for triggering samples or finger drumming; and nine assignable faders for mixing tracks together and controlling the master output. Oxygen 49 MKIV also has dedicated transport controls and track-up and track-down buttons that allow you to initiate play, stop and record in the DAW environment right from your keyboard controller.

Use Your Favorite DAW
The Oxygen 49 MIDI controller offers out-of-the-box integration with popular DAWs, including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase and many more. Oxygen 49's controls instantly map to key parameters in your favorite DAW, enabling you to immediately tweak the mixers, editors and transport windows. Additionally, Oxygen 49 MKIV has built-in customizable mapping presets that quickly interface Oxygen 49 with your favorite effect plug-ins and virtual instruments. The factory presets map Oxygen 49 to the bundled software, SONiVOX Twist, so you can plug in and start making music right out of the box. Setting up a MIDI controller with your software doesn't get any easier than this.

Ableton Live Lite
Ableton Live Lite is included with Oxygen 49 MKIV for immediate music creation. One of the most popular performance and production programs available in the world, Ableton Live Lite is a powerful music creation tool that enables musicians and producers to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise and edit musical ideas in a fluid audio/MIDI environment. Host plug-ins and use Oxygen 49 to produce, compose or perform all within Ableton Live Lite. When you are satisfied with your work, Ableton Live lets you save it or mix it down.

SONiVOX TWIST
SONiVOX Twist is a spectral morphing synthesis virtual instrument. Comprised of a dynamic interface, an advanced pattern generator and onboard effects, Twist lets you create serious sounds using simple controls. Two swirling sound layers provide unique harmonic controls and form the basis of every patch. Sculpt your sound with a multi-mode filter, independent amp and filter envelope generators, and a LFO that can be synced to tempo.

Not worth the Money

This is a decent keyboard, no more, no less. The keys are hyper-springy... doesn't bother me, but it's worth noting. I'll get to the velocity later. Knobs, faders, and buttons all feel cheap and plastic-y, but are easy to program. The pads are simultaneously its biggest star and biggest letdown. They FEEL great - solid, firm, and the lights are cool (i guess). However, because the default mapping is in a ridiculous fashion (it maps the pads to mirror a set of keys that make no sense), and because there's NO WAY TO CHANGE IT (you can transpose the entire set of pads up and down, but not individually, nor can you remap them to MIDI CC), it makes them pretty useless. Velocity, from the pads to the keys, is terrible. When you use any of the velocity curves for the keys, it's either making you hammer on the keys for a decent sound, or if you even look at the keys wrong the get crazy loud - no middle ground (except to use the fixed velocity setting, but then what's the point of using a keyboard?) The pads are too sensitive - it requires an incredibly deft touch to get even semi-modulated perc and drum lines. I got mine for a deal, and was hoping to have a good time. I sold it, and got a Nektar Impact LX49. Much better, in every way, shape, and form. Don't waste your time with M-audio keyboards.

Had the smaller Oxygen 25 for recording with Logic Pro X. Decided I needed larger keyboard. Works like a charm - plug and play. No issues with the smaller (Oxygen 25) I have had for a year and a half or more. The M-Audio products always work without issues. Price is right too.

  • I would not recommend this product unless you only use keys.

The keys are very nice. They are not quite MPK quality but they are in the arena. It's a full on disgrace that you can't remap the pads, and the mapping they've chosen is not even slightly thought out.

I´m buyed this controller in December of 2016 and then was storage without being unpacked for 2 years. After that time, I had the opportunity to test the controller, unfortunately it was not working properly, it was evident damage in the equipment, the controller has a factory defect !!! Unfortunately, they do not change it for the time that has passed.

  • Solid control. Nice keys for non weighted.

It does the job and is a sold midi controller for the price. I initially thought I would use the bads but in general I don't and thats good as the pads are a bit stiff for my taste. For non-weighted keys they feel great.

I bought this controller about 3 years ago, and it usually works well. I primarily use it with Pro Tools 11 on a Windows 10 computer. Every few months or so, Pro Tools will freeze when loading, but will resume normally once I turn this controller off. This leads me to believe that there is some non-compatibility issue between Pro Tools 11, and the drivers for this on Windows. The manufacturer claims that it's compatible with both Pro Tools, and Windows, so this is a little disappointing. It's possible that there is just a setting that I need to tweak to prevent this, but either way it's something that should be known about. Otherwise, the build quality is nice. The knobs and sliders seem to work well, although you need to move them a little bit to "wake them up" before they do anything in Pro Tools. That's a little annoying, but not a big deal.
