Dynamic Drive Pedal Test - Rob Chapman Puts the GAMMA Bacchus Dynamic Driver Pedal to the Test

Gamma Budget Pedals: Distortion, Overdrive, Chorus, Delay, Reverb

Description
The versatile GAMMA Bacchus Dynamic Driver can unleash enough raucous grind to kick off the god of wine’s most riotous shindigs. But it can also produce a transparent boost with a bit of hair—perfect for voicing serene melodies as exhausted revelers contemplate the stars while lounging on plush cushions. Bacchus is one of six stompboxes in our brand-new and exclusive GAMMA guitar effects pedals line—which also includes the Altas Boosted Overdrive, Cumulus 3-Way Reverb, Eros Clean Chorus, Hades Metal Distortion and Narcissus Warm Delay. We’re Guitar Center, and we know guitar players, so we populated the GAMMA line with six effects that are absolutely essential for gigging. In fact, you can construct a versatile and professional pedalboard with the sextet of GAMMA pedals alone.
All pedals in the GAMMA guitar effects series feature stunning metal-flake finishes, gig-tough chassis and knobs, scrupulously curated circuitry and buffered bypass (for consistent tone and signal output), as well as a compact size that won’t devour real estate on your pedalboard. Each GAMMA pedal can be run from a 9-volt battery or power supply (battery and DC adapter not included). In addition, we are extremely aware that the last thing players want is for their gear to crumble under pressure, so the GAMMA line was designed to defy the rigors of constant use and to sound sensational every time you plug in to play.

Bacchus Dynamic Driver Controls and Features
The Bacchus Dynamic Driver offers flexible gain staging via its Level and Drive controls—which can be adjusted from restrained overdrive to a Bacchanal of distortion. Similarly, the Tone control has enough range to evoke warm, cozy nights or the bright assault of merciless daylight. Want to start a rumble? The Bacchus adds more sonic merriment with its Fat switch, which boosts lows to bulk up your sound. GAMMA pedals are also designed to endure the hardships of real-world use. Electrical footswitching protects against audible noise and other glitching that can sometimes occur when a mechanical switch begins to wear out. Buffered bypass ensures a strong and consistent signal is sent to the other pedals in your chain, so there shouldn’t be any volume dips or other anomalies when you swap or add effects on the fly. The heavy-duty metal chassis and knobs are durable enough to withstand being kicked off stages, tossed into gig bags and any other abuses that can occur during live gigs, studio sessions and gear transport.

How Does the Bacchus Dynamic Driver Sound?
Like some renowned “blues box” pedals, Bacchus can deliver just-over-the-edge-of-breakup swagger with articulation and coherence. However, the pedal’s revved-up gain can also furnish AC/DC-style crunch, Foo Fighters-like snarl and even reach echoes of Muse-inspired distortion. How frenzied—or how mellow—you can take the Bacchus also depends on your attack, touch and feel. All of the drive pedals in the GAMMA line are extremely responsive, so you can alter Bacchus’ overdrive voicing by simply adjusting the controls on your guitar for playing like Typhon (god of demons) or Eirene (goddess of peace).

Power User Tips for Drive Pedals
Bacchus wasn’t known for passing up a good hedonistic celebration, and the Bacchus Dynamic Driver loves corrupting clean amps. It can be a show saver for fly gigs when the backline provides a guitar amp that’s a bit too genteel, and you need to rock, rage and roar. Bacchus’ wide-ranging Drive control can deliver those sounds with a few tweaks—even right in the middle of a performance. Bacchus can also see duty as a "riff clarifier." If you find your licks buried in a dense band mix, crank the Tone control to full treble and set the switch to Fat. The result is a laser-beam-like tone that can slice through a diamond, and yet the Fat setting provides enough girth to keep the sound from becoming painfully searing.

Nuanced Drive
The GAMMA Bacchus Dynamic Driver sits in the tone zone between crunch (like the GAMMA Atlas Boosted Overdrive) and untamed saturation (similar to the GAMMA Hades Metal Distortion). If you can only fit one pedal on your board, and have to negotiate blues, rock, new wave and metal styles, you should invite the fierce yet festive Bacchus to your gigs. While the word "gamma" denotes the third letter of the Greek alphabet, it also stands for three pertinent reasons why GAMMA guitar effects pedals deliver extraordinary tone, tough-as-a-tank manufacturing and fantastic value: They are crafted by people who love guitar, for everyone who plays guitar, and they are only available at Guitar Center.

I don't usually go for overdrives. I'm used getting crunch/distortion from the amp, especially heavy distortion. I was really impressed with how well this pedal sounded like an amp. I thought it was very responsive to my playing and had a sweet character to it. It's definitely not always on, but when I need a lower gain distortion sound, this is what I use. Also, I wanted to note; not the greatest if you're trying to boost and already distorted sound. I use it as a crunch channel and it works really well for that.
Impressive and extremely versatile.

Great Peddle

I tested this Bacchus pedal in tandem with my Fulltone OCD 1.4, as they offer similar features. My test rig was an Epiphone Supernova through an Orange Amplifier with clean settings. Throughout numerous matching knob settings, I was surprised at how well it did in comparison as the OCD. You could tell the two apart in coloring, but not in a negative way. The Bacchus held its own in every setting and would be a great peddle for those looking to fill that hole in their peddleboard. Its build-quality is solid and good. It can handle being on the road. Its housing is tough, and knobs and switch tight and sturdy. As with any boutique pedal, there is no easy open battery compartment. You'll need a screwdriver for battery applications. Perhaps knob-screws to make that tool-less would be a nice touch, but it's a minor issue. This is a good peddle, built well, and delivering all of the color, versatility, and quality as other similar, well-built peddles.
Works perfectly!

Works great! So far, better than other brands that I have used. No cons that I have seen or felt as of yet. Color matches perfectly with my set. Would definitely recommend to me fellow musicians to use for themselves. Easy to use as a novice as well and can be used by anyone that may need.
Awesome pedal! I want to try others now!

Outstanding pedal with excellent build quality! It's sturdy! Mine didn't work with my 9V battery but it did work once plugged into my pedal power cables. It's clean with crisp distortion and doesn't add extra hum.
