Smolder Acoustic Overdrive | Effects Pedals | Fender

Description

It’s tough to add overdrive to acoustic guitars—not only can it sound unmusical, it can also cause tone-destroying feedback. Designed specifically for use with acoustic instruments, the all-analog Fender Smolder Acoustic Overdrive effects pedal elegantly solves these issues with Fender know-how. To soften the bright attack of a piezo pickup, Fender included a Pickup Compensation control that smooths out the highs. The Drive knob controls the amount of distortion, while 3-band EQ and Filter controls let you shape your sound to taste. Fender even includes a cabinet simulation to add some flavor when plugged into a full-range acoustic amp or PA.

Designed by Fender's in-house team of experts, the Smolder Acoustic Overdrive is an all-original Fender circuit. The chassis is crafted from lightweight, durable anodized aluminum and the Amp Jewel LED gives your pedalboard the classic Fender look. The switchable LED-backlit knobs show your control settings on a dark stage at a glance.

At first it hummed. After trying what was in the video tutorial, I was going to return it. Last ditch effort, I swapped out the power cable I had attached to it and voila! This pedal is well thought out and really adds another dimension to my acoustics. Playing it through my Vox AD50VT on 'Boutique CL' setting. I highly recommend it.

This is meant to be an overdrive for acoustic guitars, and it does that well. However, I like this pedal for it's ability to be a very subtle overdrive, be it for acoustic or electric guitars. I tend to play guitar fairly clean whether acoustic or electric. The blend knob on this pedal helps add the perfect amount of gain for your taste. You can go low with very little effect to your clean tone or all out and cover up the clean with full distorted overdrive. But I think it provides a nice mix between the two, which is where I tend to land. Would definitely recommend for the electric guitar player looking to add a slight amount of overdrive on their sound!

Just not so sure about it. I almost returned it. Giving it more time.

The pluses: its solidly built and it has nice blue lights on the individual knobs. The minuses: not inexpensive and did not approach electric sounds for my piezo Epiphone acoustic. Maybe if you have a great pickup system? Or if you already have a magnetic soundhole pickup then this thing can give some sounds. Instead I just grabbed my cheapo Zoom multifx pedal and created a patch with eq-->overdrive--->compressor--->eq and it sounds a zillion times more realistic.

  • Eats Batteries

This literally eats batteries. There were battery crumbs left over this pedal spit out after blowing through them. It does a fair approximation of distortion for an acoustic, but it's not worth the price. Would not buy again.

I use this for my Taylor 412 acoustic - going directly to P.A. (I use a Fishman pre amp as well) I play in various acoustic trios and I needed something to boost volume for solos - plus add a little sustain/overdrive as needed. I was pleasantly surprised with the tone, and I had NO feedback problems at all. It really helps put my acoustic leads in the same proficiency level as my electric leads. It takes a bit of tweaking to find the sweet spot between enough sustain - yet not too much distortion - but the sweet spot is very much attainable. There's a slight pop when you click it on - but not enough to be overly noticeable or annoying. I'm VERY happy with this pedal !!
