Great Tones and Easy to Learn It's Capabilities!

I purchased the Fender Mustang GTX50 several weeks ago at my local Guitar Center and wanted to work with it for a few weeks before doing a review of this modeling combo amplifier. First off, what do I love about this amp! 1- Great sound and a ton of great sounding amp models. 2- Very easy to understand control layout and anything you don't understand is covered in pretty good detail in the online manual. 3- The 12" Celestron speaker is awesome though I haven't really pushed it yet, as about 50% volume is about my limit in the room, I play in. 4- The process of connecting to my router and the web was very easy. 5- The fact that it is easy to update the software and hopefully it continues to be updated for many years to come. 6- That Fender and the online community provide tons of great sounding models and setups to get the sound you like. What could be better! 1- My only real problem and it now seems to matter a little less with time, is connecting it to the Bluetooth, and that was really aggravating for the first few days. I have many Bluetooth enabled items in my home, and that I interact with every day with my phone, TV, computer, vehicles, stereo, and Fender Micro Mustang and they are all awesome and require nothing but turning on the Bluetooth and plug and play. The Mustang GTX50 took me two days to finally understand the sequence and hoops I have to jump through to connect and get Bluetooth to talk between the GTX50 and either my computer or my phone. 2- There is a major lag when trying to play along with Bluetooth with backing tracks from either the phone or computer, yet no lag with the Micro Mustang. 3- The problem with the lag is known by Fender and hopefully this concern and the connection process will be addressed in a firmware update in the future. Note: As a work around for the Bluetooth streaming from a computer or phone and avoiding all the lag issues just connect a USB to 3.5mm cable to the AUX port on the GTX50 and have fun. Would I recommend this amplifier? Yes, even with the Bluetooth issues it is a great sounding amplifier. EDIT: I've changed my 4-star rating to a 5-star rating, as I've found a way to connect to the Bluetooth 100% of the time and it seems this works for everyone I've shared it with after I read of the process. First, if not already done update the GTX to the latest firmware version. Second, if you have Fender Tone 3.0 installed of your tablet or phone, delete it and install the latest version. Third, turn off your phone or tablets Wi-Fi. Fourth, turn off the GTX, turn on and wait until the Fender logo appears, the turn off again. You may or may not need to turn off your wi-fi on your phone or tablet depending on if it is an Apple or Android.

The Good, the Bad, and the Awful

The good news is the Fender presets, particularly the clean ones. Pretty much the whole Fender range is available. The more overdriven sounds seem fizzy, like a bad multi-effects pedal I used to know. But you can adjust the effects and clean stuff up. This brings us to the bad news, and the bad news is really awful. It's the Bluetooth connectivity. You keep having to redo it and redo it. Your amp says the Bluetooth is on. Your phone says it can't connect. Then the phone says you are connected, but you're not. Aside from regularly refusing to connect, it also causes the amp to cut off and on. (According to some of the many, many people who are discussing this problem online, this is due to the Wifi interfering with the Bluetooth.) The manuals are not particularly helpful on this. This spotty app connectivity and the amp flickering off and on would be a nightmare in a professional situation, like a live show or studio time on the clock. "Scuse me, ladies and gents, while I tinker with the *x?/!!* phone, download a firmware update, and then tinker some more." The work-around is: Use the WiFi AT HOME to periodically update the firmware, and use the Bluetooth AT HOME to place your favorite presets at the top of the list. Otherwise, outside the house, turn off the Bluetooth and Wifi. I ended up using only the Fender clean presets. For overdrive and distortion, connect pedals to the amp input. For reverb and such, wire these pedals into the effects loop. I can tell you right now, first time out with this amp, at a large club in Manhattan, I will be using mostly the Fender Deluxe presets, a PackRat at the front end, and a Blue Sky Reverb in the loop. DO NOT TRY TO GIG USING THE APP. Once you have the presets where you want them, turn all that *x?/!!* off.

A 66 year old guitar player, 50+ years, I needed a light, portable amp with great sound and this definitely has that covered. It has all the classic Fender amp selections and sounds clear and the natural distortion sounds are really good. There are 200 presets, but honestly most of them are way too saturated with effects, maybe fun for a teen aged to play with but nothing that anyone could use in a performance. I was looking at the 25 watt amp but went with 50 w as it has input/output options on rear panel to run direct through a sound system. The Fender Tone app works fine, a little tricky to get it to connect but once that is on line I can now tweak the presets or creat new amp combinations on the empty slots. For the price I'm happy and 100% satisfied.

  • The best amp I've ever owned.

I'm a guitarist by hobby and record/practice at home on this amp. It has so many cool settings and 200 customizable presets with many more to download via the accompanying app (Fender Tone). Connects to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth, and east to record straight from it.

Absolutely love this amp. Full of model amps and effect pedals. For recording users, The sound card to pc records amazing on Ableton and Reaper. Has a separate volume out, and able to turn volume down on the amp separately.

Not especially. Fender is known for it's brightness ( think country) and has an open back. Open back cabinets do not lend themselves to lows.

It will 'work. It doesn't do low frequencies well and if you turn it up there's a good chance you'll blow the speaker.

You would have to push it, but it should be big enough for small venues. But only the smallest. Middle sized venues would be a bit iffy.

If using the headphone output, does this cancel the line out option or just the speaker? I want to record directly from this amp but use the headphone out to monitor it without the speaker being active.
