Description

The Edge semi-modular analog percussion synthesizer from Behringer gives you the tools to craft your signature beats and basslines. With its pure analog signal path and dual VCOs, the Edge generates a tremendous range of sounds to turn your imagination into reality. For next-level performance, the Edge's sequencer reaches an astounding 10,000 BPM giving you greater control and allowing for experimental beats.

Sculpt Your Sound

The Edge synth goes beyond predefined routing with its semi-modular layout and 15x10 patch matrix for advanced sound design. Route control voltages, triggers, velocity, noise and more to enable deep sound shaping possibilities. Input external audio sources into the matrix for further manipulation. The patch bay gives you the flexibility to customize the Edge to your creative needs.

Perform in Real Time

With 44 dedicated knobs and buttons, the Edge gives you direct access to all vital parameters in a logical layout. Tweak filter cutoff and resonance, amplitude decay and other controls in real time for evolving beats. The hands-on interface puts the joy back into beatmaking and lets you perform with precision.

Connect External Gear for Even More Possibilities

The Edge allows you to integrate external gear for expanded creative options. Use MIDI keyboards, footswitches or expression pedals for added real-time control. Chain multiple Edges together to create intricate polyrhythms and beats. The Edge provides the I/O connectivity and flexibility to incorporate other instruments into your setup.

Analog Architecture Creates Rich, Organic Sounds

By utilizing classic analog circuits in new ways, the Edge generates deep, warm bass tones, tight percussive sounds and everything in between. From dark, moody to bright and snappy, the pure analog signal path delivers the richness and nuance you expect from vintage gear. The Edge gives you the tools to build the foundation of your tracks and bring your beats to life.

It says this machine is monophonic. How can this operate as a proper drum machine if only one sound can play at a time? Even drum machines nearly as old as I am are polyphonic, i.e. they can sound a BD + SD + clap, toms, hats, all firing at once. If only one sound can be made by this machine, that's gonna be a severe limitation to the beats. Like a deal killer.

The term “monophonic” can be misleading in the context of a drum machine, especially one like the Behringer Edge, which is really a semi-modular analog percussion synthesizer more akin to a single voice analog synth than a full drum machine. Here's what “monophonic” means in this case: It refers to the synth voice being capable of generating only one sound (note) at a time, not multiple layered timbres or overlapping notes. So the Edge can produce one percussive sound at a time, like a kick, snare-ish tone, or other analog percussion effect—but not multiple simultaneously. The Edge is not a full drum machine like a Roland TR-808 or 909. Instead, it's designed to synthesize a single analog drum voice—typically a kick, tom, or metallic percussion. You’d use it in tandem with other sound sources, like the Behringer Crave, RD-8, or even external samplers and synths. In a modular or semi-modular setup, you'd often have multiple single-voice devices, each generating a part of the drum kit. For example: One Edge for the bass drum Another analog synth voice for snare Separate module for hi-hats, etc. The Edge can be triggered via CV/gate or MIDI, meaning it integrates well into a modular or DAW-based rig, but again—one sound at a time. So, to directly answer your concern: yes, the Edge is monophonic, and no, it cannot act as a full traditional drum machine. It’s one voice in a larger percussive or modular ensemble. If you want multiple simultaneous drum parts, you'd need multiple units or other gear alongside it.
