Excellent bass DI pedal w/ Scrambler unit

GC web site messed up my review. This is the short version. The pedal is excellent. Superior tone, awesome crunch distortion, heavy duty tank-like build quality. I don't own a bass amp, and now I don't need to. I use this pedal XLR-to-interface for recording. Wouldn't think twice about bringing it to a gig and directly plugging into the house PA. The DI itself is great, nice, clean tone (I use a 12V DC power supply for a little extra head room). The EQ portion (switchable) is good, nicely laid out and very functional. Easy to use and read dials. The Scrambler unit is perfect. Nice crunchy distortion. I use the Blend knob about 1/2 which mixes the distortion and DI sound about 50/50. This way when I enable the Scrambler I don't lose tone - the bottom end stays solid while the top end crunches up. Sounds AWESOME. You can get wild with the knobs but I keep the distortion 3/4 and the blend 1/2 and I get a sweet crunchy sound when enabled. I use the EQ portion for volume boost into my interface for recording. I don't use the Ultra Hi or Low buttons. The Hi adds 'something' but I can't hear it. The low removes a little low-mids and boosts about 40Hz. For my style of rock it doesn't make any tone difference so I leave them both off. I really appreciate the XLR output (has 1/4" line out as well) with ground lift. I don't use the Aux input. The LEDs on the pedal are quite bright, you'll definitely see them. Overall build quality is top-of-the-line. This pedal will take a beating and keep on rocking. Mine did not come with a power supply since I bought it open-box, I don't know if a new one does. I used an aftermarket 12v supply (unit supports 9-12v DC). The only Cons I will nit pick about: Dials are very light - brushing them with your hand will change them. Also, I'd like a non-EQ volume control as well. As it is you need to engage the EQ to use the volume control. This is a must-have Ampeg Bass DI. If it were to break I'd buy another ASAP.

Wish it was more reliable

I used this pedal for practices, live performances, on tour, and at home. Excellent sound, I just wish it was more reliable. The first one I bought worked for 2 days and then somehow got locked in a feedback loop making it impossible to play. The only thing I could hear was a high pitched ringing feedback sound, even if I unplugged my guitar, I could still hear it in my cab. I returned it and got a new one but the same thing happened mid set on tour. I'm very disappointed because I love the sound it can make but I just don't trust it anymore. Maybe after they work out the kinks it'll be a great pedal!

This thing is great. With some tweaking, it can make pretty much any amp sound like a classic SVT. Even better, you can DI to the house PA and make that sound like a classic SVT and not have to carry an SVT or any other amp if you don't want to. It's also built like a tank. Metal with metal switches. You can never have too much metal on your pedalboard.

  • DI and Ampeg sound great, scrambler not so much

This is exactly what I was looking for in the Ampeg DI end, just big powerful sound. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the Scrambler section, it's just not a very good sounding distortion. It would have been really nice to have everything right in one pedal.

I use this in a church setting and this thing delivers. The fact that I can use this before any FOH setup is perfect as I play in several venues. Every single one I play at gets comments on how different my bass sounds from anyone else. I play an Ibanez SR30 5-String and it takes an already beautiful sounding instrument to another level. But...I've had to send 2 of these back because they straight up quit working. Both times it was during sound check. I'm powering it with a VooDoo supply and my pedalboard is never in adverse elements, but now I'm on my second and I'm having to take it to an "authorized service provider" to have it tweaked. As with all of your decent gear...buy a service plan or extended warranty. The extra $30 is worth it on this one. BUT...when this pedal is working it's amazing and by far the best thing on my board.

  • Brought my tone back from the dead.

I record a lot of music in my apartment, so having a 250 watt combo with a 15 inch speaker is out of the question. I needed something to give my old Fender jazz bass with 7 year old strings a kick in the rear when I record direct with it. On a whim, I purchased this gizmo and within ten minutes of using it I was completely satisfied. It gave my bass tone definition and punch, and the sound coming out of it going straight into my recording interface was amazing. It doesn't just color your sound with EQ, it structures it into a solid sounding bass tone. This is all I need for recording any future bass parts...well, maybe a set of new strings also.

Went into guitar center to buy the Sansamp but decided to check out a few other bass DI pedals before I headed to the checkout desk. Became intrigued by the SCR-DI both due to the warm vintage sound and the fact that it would make a great practice amp. I also liked the ease of use, as the Sansamp was way more complex as far as different features to dial in your tone. But, all my other bass playing friends had the Sansamp and that's what I thought I was going to buy. A very helpful sales person suggested I try the AMPEG and if I didn't like it I could return it. I agreed fully expecting that I would be back very soon to exchange it. I couldn't have been more wrong as once I got home and plugged it in, I realized I found my sound! On top of that, I absolutely love using this all in one pedal to practice at home. The bonus is the distortion feature, it will definitely get some use. If you're looking for a modern sound, this is in for you but I personally could not be happier :-)
