Neumann

collapse expand iconDescription

Neumann's reputation for incredible sonic quality has stretched from the beginning of the signal chain, with microphones like the legendary U 67, to the end of it with reference monitors and headphones, like the KH series of nearfield monitors, and headphones like the NDH series. With the introduction of the Neumann MT 48 USB audio interface, they have firmly planted a flag in the center of the signal chain. Featuring a plethora of advanced features and an astounding 136dB signal-to-noise ratio, the MT 48 combines AD/DA converter and digital audio transport technology from the legendary Swiss firm Merging Technology (hence the "MT" in the name) with Neumann's own long-standing knowledge of advanced analog audio tech to create a groundbreaking desktop USB-C audio interface and control surface. Easy integration with whatever audio software you use greatly expands the power of your home (or mobile) studio.

Powerful Control at Your Fingertips

The first thing you notice, right out of the box, is the large color touchscreen. It lets you know that the Neumann MT 48 has a number of tricks up its sleeve beyond the average audio interface. In fact, the MT 48 is a combination digital mixing desk and audio interface in a single, convenient, compact package. Virtually every facet of its extensive abilities is available directly from the touchscreen, from simply setting gain and pan on an input channel to adjusting the 4-band, fully parametric EQ or dynamics processing run by the internal state-of-the-art DSP. There are four separate mixes available within the unit—the main outputs, a secondary stereo mix and two headphone mixes, so everybody gets to hear what they need when you're tracking. There's even a built-in talkback mic with its own controls, so you're always in communication.

Versatile Analog Connectivity

The four analog input channels are versatile. Channels One and Two inputs are on phantom-power able XLR/1/4" combo jacks to handle both mic- and line-level signals, while channels Three and Four have XLR inputs on the back with phantom power available, and combined instrument/line-level inputs on the front. All of these inputs use Merging's class-leading AD converters for a mind-boggling 136dB of S/N ratio. Balanced XLR main outs (1/2) and balanced TRS line outs (3/4) easily enable a dual monitor setup or the addition of a dedicated headphone amp when you need to expand on the pair of independent headphone outs on the front panel.

Powerful Digital Expansion

Thanks to Neumann's partnership with Merging Technologies, there are several surprises waiting on the rear of the MT 48, enabling it to expand from a simple desktop system to become the heart of a much larger recording studio. To start, ADAT optical I/O makes it easy to add an extra eight inputs with any external mic pre with ADAT optical connections. MIDI I/O is available through an optional TRS–DIN5 expansion cable (sold separately) from 1/4" TRS jacks that also provide general purpose I/O for external accessories like footswitches. The big expansion power, though, comes from the RJ-45 jack on the rear, which supports the Dante (AES67) digital audio standard, offering the capability of creating large digital audio networks.

Neumann MT-48 Audio Interface In Use

Based on a Century of Audio Experience

The MT 48 is solidly based in Neumann's century of audio experience, which debuted with the release of the first mass-produced condenser microphone, the CVM-3 in 1928. That legacy shines through in every aspect of the Neumann MT 48 audio interface, from the state-of-the-art circuitry to the simplicity of set up and intuitive workflow. The MT 48 is one of those pieces of gear that simply gets out of your way when creative inspiration hits and audio quality is paramount. Best of all, the level of expandability means that it can grow with your setup, no matter how expansive it becomes.
