The NS Design CR Series 4 String Electric Double Bass was made in the Czech Republic, where there is a long-held reputation for producing the highest-quality upright basses. In its June 2000 issue, Bass Player magazine, citing its impeccable craftsmanship, stated, "This bass plays so well, in fact, that upright players may find it plays too easily."

European maple neck and body with a flamed maple face. The neck has a traditional profile and is fitted with a Macassar ebony fingerboard. An active 18V hum-canceling preamp with volume, bass EQ, and treble EQ controls is wired to both a Polar bridge-mounted piezo and an EMG magnetic pickup.

The CR Series Upright Bass comes with a foldable chrome-plated tripod stand, a padded Cordura bag for the bass, and an interior bag for the tripod stand.

I have been playing my CR5 bass for over 6 years now. It is an amazing instrument. With the combination of Piezo bridge and EMG magnetic pickups I am able to obtain just about any tonal quality I want. The rich growl and sustain rivals $30K+ real stand-ups I have played on. The buttery feel and long sustain make this ax an absolute dream to play. Being able to stay behind the neck for fingering all the way up the finger board is pretty amazing, too. I no longer use my real standup - particularly for gigs. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Word of caution - the interior bag for the tripod stand is NOT substantial enough to provide protection for the instrument. I have a couple of nice sized gouges in the neck to prove it. Wrap the tri-pod stand in pipe insulation, Large bubble wrap, foam, a towel or just about anything before putting it into the interior bag (the interior bag floats freely with the bass itself inside of the gig bag).

I played one of these while I was shopping for an electric upright and the tone and feel was top notch. The bass definitely felt better to play than anything else I tried and the unique pickup system was great. Everything on the bass was wonderful, however I found that the ns designs wav 4 was a better fit for me. I like passive basses and the wav 4's simple control layout appealed to me. The Cr (this bass) had a little better sound and feel but not the several thousand dollar price difference between this and the wav 4. This is a great work of art but the average gigging bassist will find themselves perfectly happy with it's lower priced cousin, the wav 4.
