A real surprise!
I have been searching for a high end acoustic electric guitar for several month's. I have bought and returned twoTaylor 814s and a Martin 28 . ALL have had problems with electronics or playability. I picked up this X Special, just out of curiosity . Wow Low action and sounds large and full through my amp and pa. Neck is perfect for me , very slim and fast .I have never played a guitar in this price range that compares. It is more suited to finger style. When you dig in the strings will buzz a bit . That's why I'm still looking at Gibsons and Martin's. I will be keeping this little giant.

Some things to consider
First off I am a rookie, so take what I say as a personal opinion. First off the positives of this guitar is it sounds absolutely beautiful plugged in, I think unplugged the sound is full, but quiet. When I played harder the strings buzzed, unless I fretted super hard a couple of strings buzzed.the case it comes with is classy and feels expensive. I like that the case has a neck protector, inside the case is all crushed bright blue velvet, absolutely stunning. Opinions differ on the HPL coating, I thought it would be cool and more durable for down by the lake, also sustainable for the environment if you care for such things. With that HPL coating there were gaps in the body construction. I see what Martian did, and appreciate it. They are giving people that can't afford the Martian name a chance to own one. I returned this guitar, and am glad I did. When I get a Martin, it will be a real Martin.

It is easy to look at this guitar & only see the adorned Martin name on the guitar. It's a great guitar, but even Martin, on occasion will use a laminated wood to cut cost. This is a fine guitar, just keep in mind, the top or back & sides are all laminated wood.

Is this guitar solid wood or laminate? It can't be both! Please don't say it's "HPL!" The description contradicts itself. Taking ambiguity to the X level. Thanks, Martin, so believable.
It's laminated. It's just not laminated wood. It's a High Pressure Laminate. HPL is 60-70 percent paper, saturated with different kinds of plastic resins. The core of a sheet of HPL is made of several layers of kraft paper (similar to shopping bag paper) saturated with phenolic resin.submitteda year ago
