collapse expand iconDescription

The Martin D-35 dreadnought acoustic guitar was birthed in the folk music boom of the 1960s. Designed in 1965, the D-35 was created because Martin was experiencing a shortage of rosewood wide enough to build their famous D-28. Known for its three-piece back, with a contrasting center wedge, the D-35 quickly caught on with musicians that preferred the cosmetic look of a three-piece back. Along with the cosmetic changes to the appearance, the D-35 offered a different sound and tone to the famous D-28.

Constructed with 1/4” bracing, the D-35 had a slight bump in the bottom end when compared to the stiffer 5/16” bracing of the D-28. Over time players really began to latch on to the tonal variation, and as a result, the D-35 quickly became an industry standard among players and collectors alike.

Vintage Tone Meets Modern Playability
Today, the D-35 Standard Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar has been refined to combine the best of the vintage 1930's appointments, with the playability of a modern guitar. Like the D-35 from the 1960s, the bracing is 1/4” in thickness, but the placement of the X brace has been forward-shifted to be located one inch from the soundhole. Now, the D-35 Standard has a very even bass, with just the right blend of the mid and high-end frequencies. The sound is everything you would expect from a fine-tuned Martin acoustic guitar.

Playability
Playability has been dramatically improved by changing the neck to a modified low oval, with a Performing Artist taper and 1-3/4” nut. The wider string spacing and comfortable neck profile allow a player to move up and down the neck with ease. And, unlike the more traditional feeling acoustic guitars of the past, newer D-35 Standard models will have familiar vintage tone with a playing feel that will be more similar to that of an electric guitar.

Other Appointments
Along with an amazing sound and feel, this D-35 Standard Dreadnought acoustic features a solid spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, ebony bridge and fingerboard, hand-fit dovetail neck joint, nitrocellulose lacquer, mother-of-pearl fingerboard inlay pattern, antique white binding, aging toner, and a bone nut and saddle.

Includes a hardshell case.

It's early, but I'm excited!

My first real guitar was a "73" D35. I was utterly in love. Now my niece is utterly in love with it. Been looking, owning, but never infatuated with 3 other D35s and a Custom D28. At this early point, I am infatuated. We will see if I fall utterly in love! Though an infant with much opening up to do, it already sounds full, rich, with depth of detail. Set up is fine, and its medium gauge strings feel like the lights I have on other guitars. My wife and I are professional singer/songwriters, blessed to be full time. This D35 will be used in concert and recording. This D35 already seems eager to birth new songs and reinvigorate their older siblings.

Sounds great, but the neck is terrible.

This guitar sounds pretty great, but wow. The neck is just awful. It very uncomfortable to play and it makes me miserable. The neck is so wide and so thin you cannot get a good grip on it. Maybe if you had the hands of a gorilla or something, but for an average sized human, no.

The D35's history speaks for itself. So there's not much to add except this is a beautiful guitar. I'm getting a professional setup this week and then the playability will match the sound and look.

  • Dream guitar delivers.

Always wanted a true professional instrument and the D-35 delivers. Just a basement strummer, but love the clear tone, full bodied bottom end, and endless playability. Will be playing this for decades and leaving it to my kids when I die.

I'm not the world's best guitarist and I've only been playing for 3 years. I should probably be much better than I am, BUT, I know now that I have this D-35 in my possession, things will change. When I heard a friend play his, I know I needed one. My guitar journey just got real.

It sounds so good. It was good when I got it, but it was not great. After a while it didn't open up as I expected. I found that the nut was the issue. I filed nut slots so that it won't have after bussing sound. If you hit a open sting, it should make a pure tone. No other tone besides initial tone. Now it sounds so good. Bigger volume and more sustain. If you want to do it, do it professionally.
