Amazing affordable Amp

I bought this amp head and a 1960A cab and I have got to say that I am completely amazed by the tone and versatility of this amp! the effects loop is amazing with the ability to switch it on and off via the foot switch, which makes switching loops or changing delays so much easier on the fly. I couldn't be happier with this rig! having two master volumes and individual channel volume knobs makes dialing in a great dirty/clean tone very easy! I've struggled for years to find an amp that has such versatility and ease of use with the kind of tone I get from this amp. Paired with my Gibson Les Paul Traditonal or my Gibson SG, this thing is a behemoth. the ability to knock down from 100 watts to 50 is great for use at home recording. there is little to no tonal difference between 50 and 100 which is nice considering my last amp was a DSL40C that had the same feature, but the tone change was horrid. I had to compensate for that with overdrive and compressors before and now I can just use the amp. great deal, pick it up now!

Buyer Beware

I wrote a review back a few months ago on my Marshall DSL100HR and from the get go, I loved this amp and it's versatility. All channels on the amp sound amazing and when put through a 4X12 cab it sounds huge.. at the price point it seems like a true bargain but truth be told, it's a let down waiting to happen. I know my way around tube amps having used them almost exclusively in my 26 years of playing and gigging. I have always had a love for Marshall, especially the JCM models... this amp came close to the tone of a JCM900 I had years ago so I was very excited to use it. I used a power conditioner for the amp in addition to a heavy duty surge protector as I always do with my gear. Recently, I was playing through the DSL at half wattage when out of nowhere the amp made some crackling and popping noises, then went silent. I checked the signal chain, both preamp and loop and everything was okay. Disconnected my Gibson Les Paul and hooked up my SG... same issue. I disconnected everything from the amp inputs and ran the signal straight from the guitar to the front of the amp and still nothing. Turned the wattage up to full, cranked the amp all the way and all you could hear was a static whisper of my signal. I bought pro coverage and since this is a manufacturer issue, they put me through to a company that apparently services Marshall... I've left several messages and no one has returned my call on getting this amp repaired. I'm a giggling musician and this is beginning to effect my ability to perform so it goes without saying I am beyond dissatisfied with this amp.

This Marshall amp covers a wide range of tones and genres. From classic Marshall to Modern, with the right speaker combo, you can get extremely close to whatever your needs are. The dual master volumes and the resonance and presence controls give you a wide breath of tonal variation. That aggressive midrange Marshall bark is very clear with the ability to sculpt the high and low ends. This amp comes highly recommended!

  • REPLACEMENT FOR DSL2000, 50 WATT HEAD

    3

    submitted3 years ago

    byJack

    fromCoastal NC

Item was a replacement for my 1997 DSL2000 50 watt head. Sound is consistent with all Marshall heads of similar type with a clipping diode in the preamp. It was slightly larger than my old amp, requiring a mod to the lining of my travel case (new amp is slightly thicker) to get inside the box. Plus side is that it sounds good and has power if you need it. These days I run my amp thru a cab simulator instead of close micing the speakers and I use lower stage volume to balance the FOH system. I've read many complaints about this amp being made overseas, but I have not experienced any of problems they've encountered. On the down side it features a digital reverb which can be barely heard when in the high gain mode. I use a separate reverb pedal thru the EFX loop (among other pedals) and it works fine. My point is Marshall should put a better digital reverb circuit in their amps if they're charging consumers for it i.e. one with more depth and duration. The amp also has an extra gain output knob (two master gain knobs) per each of the preamp settings. Since each preamp has it's own individual gain setting, I feel this feature is redundant and just puts more noise in the signal chain. I use a Marshall 1960AX cabinet and the tone is excellent, but I feel that getting a great tone from ANY amp is the compatible matching of the guitar, amp, and speakers. Changing any one of those factors changes everything. This is the 4th Marshall amp I've owned since 1977 and I rated it 3 stars because I think Marshall can do better with the reverb and it's questionable number of gain control knobs.

Great amp and at it's price point it's hard to beat. I own a couple other amps around this price point an orange, and a 5153 and the dsl is an all around workhorse. Sure the 5153 is better for modern metal and the orange is better for sabbath style and doom. But the dsl can do both very well and way more at the same price point. Versatility is the main feature of this amp and while it's versatile it's not lacking quality in that versatility.

I owned own and it quit on me after 8 mnths . its made cheap and doesnt hold up with time.i did nothing to it there was never any abuse done to the head it just quit one day. They have the cheapest tubes in it and theyre not covered more then 90 days so if it does out on you after that you foot the bill . and pro coverage doesnt cover the tubes . they will repair it yes but honestly don't waste your money on this . Total waste of money and its not that loud . beware though it looks pretty its just the looks the rest is garbage. I'm not trusting anymore tube amp heads in this price range especially a Vietnam made head. The quality is just not there you've been warned
