great product, good price

This product works well, gets the job done! Good price too. I used this for the keyboard and it got the buzz out, I guess which was caused due to impedence imbalance.

This direct box is probably OK for a permanent studio installation, where only the 1/4" jacks will be routinely plugged/unplugged. The XLR jack is plastic and will not wear well, so it's not a good unit for gigging. The attenuation switch seems to throttle back the output from an active bass on the -20db setting about 15-20%, but the -40db and 0db settings yield nearly identical output. This box is worth about half it's price, IMO.

Doing the job

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

I purchased this in order to connect my bass amplifier to the sound system at my church. So far it is doing the job and a very affordable price.

Works great

By Brent

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

Bought two of these to carry with me during various sound reinforcement gigs. Over two years they've been bullet-proof, solid as a tank, and have handled every signal thrown at them (keys, bass, guitar, wireless receivers) while sounding great. If I had a need I'd definitely buy more of these.

Perfect...

By Uli Garcia

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

Looking for something well built and not expensive... Try this you wont be disappointed. I was looking for a direct box a while back suddenly I needed something to eliminate a "BUZZ" I had when I was recording so I bought this and it worked like a Charm. I pretty much use for anything (Bass, Guitar, Piano). "Just Try It"

Great all around DI

By T Wright

from Birmingham, Al

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

I do Professional sound production. I have 6 of these in our rig. I also have Radial J48s. I have as much confidence in this DI as the J48. I have had some of these LIve Wire DIs for almost 10 years without a failure or complaint. Plus I can buy 7 of these for the price of ONE J48. Make no mistake the J48 are unbeatable when you need an active DI. This DI is unbeatable when you don't.

Know your Application

By Craig Miller

from Lititz, PA

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

I'm giving the Live Wire Passive direct box 3 Stars but truth is I own some of the issues. My need was to increase a guitar and bass signal going to a AON (JBL) portable PA system. The guitars I needed to increase the signal from all have passive pickups (Fender Strat and Bass). I thought I explained my need to the guy at GC pretty well but his recommendation was the Passive Live wire. I now am pretty sure that what I need is a active direct box. I've tried all combinations of getting something out of the box but nothing. When I have the switch on 0dB the guitar signals go through but without any increase in signal strength. On 20dB and 40dB no signal goes throw. I've tried before my pedal board, after, with no peddle board just straight the the PA system, everything. I'm wondering if I might have a bum box? My point is, do some homework (or at least more than I did) before you by a box to bump up your signal. I'm still not 100% sure this box shouldn't work? Some of the reviews indicate they are using it in a similar application and are happy with the results. The only thing is the reviewer doesn't clarify if they are using active or passive guitar pickups - might make a big difference? The good news is I took the box back to GC and without fail they credited my back the full amount with no hassle.

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

I ordered 2 of these - one for live and one for studio. I don't have numerous hours of use on them yet, but they look to be built well enough and I've done various testing on them. I would have given them 5 stars since they seem so good for the price (especially with the sales that GC runs), but I gave them 4 stars for these reasons:
The 20dB pad attenuates both the pass-through and the XLR, but the 40dB pad only attenuates the XLR and not the pass-through. When set to the 40dB pad, the XLR output drops 40dB, but the pass-through jumps back up to full input level. Both units do this, so I assume this is by design, but I'm not sure why it would be and this should have been specified. I doubt I'll ever need 40dB of attenuation on the pass-through, but this seems like an odd configuration.
I also noticed that when I had a guitar plugged in with the pass-through going to the amp and the XLR going to a pre-amp of a recording interface, it had hum if I had the ground lifted and no hum when set to GND. I would expect the opposite, so I checked the GND lift with a meter and it checked out correct, but that behavior also seems odd.
Regardless, this looks like a good DI for the price. I haven't noticed any tonal problems so far, but then I've only used them less than an hour each. From what I've heard so far, though, I don't expect any audio quality related problems.

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

This works well for my active pickup bass guitars. Full tone to amp and interface. However, the DI does suck tone when using passive pickups mostly going to the amp. No noise issues.

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

Very pleased with the operation of this Direct Box...had an issue with hum when trying to couple my arranger keyboard and vocal mic to a monitor amp and the house PA system. Using this little box corrected the problem entirely. It worked so well, I decided to buy a second Direct Box just in case it's needed for someone else in the band.

Comments about Livewire SPDI Passive Direct Box with Attenuation Pad:

I was unaware that my active acoustic guitar pickups were better served with a passive DI box! I have always used an active DI and wondered why I wasn't able to get a clean sound. I plugged this one in and I was amazed at the sound quality and the tone and color of my guitar was present for the first time!
