Line 6 | HX Stomp XL | Overview

Line 6

Description

The Line 6 HX Stomp XL is a professional-grade multi-effects pedal that provides over 300 amp, cab and effects models from the Helix family of products. You will appreciate the realistic sound and feel of the HX models, which are powered by the same SHARC DSP chip found in Line 6's flagship Helix units. With 128 presets optimized for a variety of musical applications like direct to PA, 4-cable amp setups and more, the HX Stomp XL has tones ready for any gig. Each preset can have up to eight simultaneous processing blocks, allowing for complex signal chains and four snapshots per preset provide versatility.

300+ Helix Models for Authentic Tone

The HX Stomp XL includes over 300 amp, cab and effects models from Helix products, modeled component-by-component to provide an authentic analog sound and feel. The DSP chip that powers the Helix line also drives the HX models, ensuring unmatched realism. From vintage to modern, clean to distorted, the HX Stomp XL covers a wide range of tones for guitar and bass.

128 Presets for Any Musical Application

With 128 factory presets, the HX Stomp XL is ready to go for any gig or recording situation. Presets are organized by instrument and application, such as direct to PA, 4-cable amp setups and more. Four snapshots can be saved per preset, allowing for versatility by providing different variations of a tone with the touch of a footswitch.

Eight Simultaneous Processing Blocks and Capacitive Footswitches

Despite its compact size, the HX Stomp XL is a powerhouse. It allows for up to eight processing blocks at once for complex signal chains. The eight capacitive-touch footswitches make it easy to select presets and edit parameters, with color-coded LED rings to keep track of functions. An intuitive interface, simple controls and full-color display further enhance usability.

Connections for Any Setup

With its robust I/O, the HX Stomp XL can serve in nearly any capacity. It works as a traditional stompbox, a backup or travel rig, an add-on for other modelers or a complete guitar or bass rig. Connections include stereo inputs and outputs, an effects loop, MIDI in/out, USB and more. The HX Stomp XL supports 4-cable amp integration, re-amping capabilities and an expansion jack for up to two expression pedals or footswitches.

sounds great

This pedal sounds incredible, and is very portable. With a stomp pedal, initially I was worried it would require a lot of menu-diving and multi-function buttons. But, the interface is surprisingly easy to use. I can chain 8 effects faster than if I had physical pedals. After fiddling with it, it's pretty intuitive (I didn't need to read the manual, but just watched a demo video). The effects are nicely categorized and easy to find. The amp emulation is incredible. You will need to watch a video to understand the looper. It's assigned like an effect in the chain (easy), but you also have to set a button to control it. The looper might be the least intuitive component, but you can set up a patch with it configured. Overall, it's not hard to setup, but requires an extra step that is not at all obvious. All other effects are fairly intuitive. The default patches cover bass, keyboard, direct input, and external sends. You'll probably want to install HX Edit and replace some of the default patches. A couple default guitar patches are great, but just need a noise gate inserted at the beginning. Though I wondered why it only holds 128 presets, as these would use virtually no memory. Maybe this is more of a UX decision, to avoid infinite scrolling. Otherwise, it looks easy to backup and change patches via HX Edit. Instead of allowing 4 snapshots, it might have been more flexible to just allow saving 512 presets. My only nit is the touch-capacitive function on the buttons 1-6 stopped working. I suspect it might be a firmware glitch in 3.15, since these worked initially before I updated. Though I'm fine with just clicking the buttons. I was pleasantly surprised that the firmware update included new effects/amps.

Excellent sound, Crap hardware

The sounds, the interface, etc... all perfect. Wouldn't change a thing. The switches on the other hand are basically disposable. If you use it heavily you'll just have to buy a new unit every couple years. They're more integral than ever and also more complicated and can't be cleaned because of the LED's. Haven't tried replacing them. Shouldn't have to. Bad job.

Lots of really good sounds and presets saved in here, with plenty of buttons to assign them to for on-the-go switching between effects/pedalboards. It can take a while to learn how to use it, and updating it is really difficult, but it pays off dividends if you can master it!

  • Tons of tone in versatile package

I wanted more versatility than the smaller HX stomp, but didn't want the entire Helix sized unit because I still wanted something to add to a pedalboard. This fit the bill perfectly. There are also tons of fantastic presets available online that can be cheaply and easily imported.

  • Excellent piece of gear!

I lead worship with an electric guitar every week and the HX Stomp XL has been a great addition to my pedalboard. Great for making loops live on the fly and also having all the effects I need.

  • Awesome all in one.

You just can't get more for your money than a Stomp. If you're hesitant, spend some time with it. It's super easy once you get the hang of it. Everything you could possibly need and/or integrate it with a few pedals.

Q&A

Have a question about this product? Our expert Gear Advisers have the answers.

  • asked byJoaquin

    fromAustin Tx

Can you go direct into mixing board or do you have to use an amp?

    Open Reply - Gear-Support
Yes, the Line 6 HX Stomp XL can be connected directly to a mixing board without the need for an amplifier. It features stereo 1/4" outputs that can be configured to send either instrument-level or line-level signals, making it suitable for direct connection to a PA system or audio interface. To ensure optimal performance, it's important to match the HX Stomp XL's output level to the input requirements of your mixing board. This can be adjusted in the Global Settings under the Ins/Outs section. For instance, if your mixer expects a mic-level input, you should set the HX Stomp XL's output accordingly to prevent signal clipping or distortion.
