Kustom Defender 1x12 / Kustom Defender 5hmod: Guitar Playthrough

collapse expand iconDescription

Kustom Engineers took the great sounding Defender 5H and lifted the virtual hood to tweak its 5 Watt motor. The results were astonishing. The Defender 5 Hot Mod (DEFENDER5HMOD) was designed for vintage tube amp tones. Ceramic capacitors were upgraded with polyester film and electrolytic type. Larger capacitance values allowing more low end and more gain. The DEFENDER5HMOD has a livelier tone that is harmonically rich, a better sounding distortion, similar to tweed and British-style circuits, and delivering a bigger note bloom usually heard only in boutique and vintage amplifiers. To dial in the Hot Mod sound Kustom used vintage "chicken head" style knobs on the Bass Response and Volume controls.

I use it at home mostly, it rocks! It gets loud for 5w. But it won't damage your hearing. May even work for a small gig or using it with a mike. It cleans up a lot with the volume control on the guitar. The Bass Response rotary gives you many options to making the tone fatter/gainier or thinner/cleaner. It has a surprising amount of flexibility. And the tone is as good as a small boutique amp. All this costs less than a good pedal, so it is quite amazing.

I use this amp head with a 2 12 cab with celestion vintage 30s.I think this amp is Class A and is very loud for 5 watts. Only flaw is no tone controls and has a very audible 60 cycle transformer hum.I haven't tried moving the transformer away from the output yet.

Would this amp be loud enough to play some medium sized gigs? (less then 1000 people)

It may be cutting it depending on what other instruments it has to cut through. Worst case scenario you can also mic the amp.
