Korg Volca FM

Korg Volca FM

KORG

Description

The volca series has defined itself by linking classic sound engines of the past with the music of today. The volca fm perpetuates this commitment to making sensible bridges for the best sounds of the past to find a new relevance in modern music-making. If you are a fan of vintage synthesis and the true milestones of innovation that have occurred along the way, you will appreciate the tip of the hat to one of the great innovators of the early 1980s, right down to the user interface.

The volca fm is a three-voice digital FM synthesizer that completely reproduces the sound engine of a classic FM synthesizer, and provides compatibility with it as well. The unique volca interface makes it easy to manipulate distinctive FM sounds even if you're not familiar with the complexities of FM synthesis. The 16-step sequencer that's one of volca's features provides new functions such as WARP ACTIVE STEP and PATTERN CHAIN that let you make even more powerful rhythm patterns.

True FM synthesis
The appearance of FM (Frequency Modulation) sound generation was a major turning point in the history of synthesizers. Its metallic and sharp sounds, most notably electric piano and synth bass, have been loved by all music creators since 1980 up to the present time. The volca fm perfectly reproduces the sound engine of the classic digital synthesizer that made the world aware of FM synthesis. Its six operators and 32 algorithms provide complete compatibility, and it can even load files in the SYS-EX/SYX format of the Yamaha DX7.

Super-easy sound editing
The volca fm makes FM sound editing accessible with the MODULATOR/CARRIER super-easy edit knobs – the knob movements are mapped to multiple parameters for sound changes that are easy to understand. FM enthusiasts can also menu dive into full parameter edits.

16-step sequencer allows to automate each parameters
There’s a loop sequencer with up to 16 steps, allowing you to record your performance on the touch panel keyboard just as you play. It’s easy to create phrases that come to mind. Up to sixteen sequence patterns can be stored in internal memory. And the motion sequence function records your knob movements, letting you add time-varying change to the sound. This is great way to polish your loops, and also lets you generate highly original live performances.

The volca fm provides a sync connector that can be easily connected to Korg's groove machines. Connect this to the other volca series unit, the electribe, or the SQ-1, and experience a session with synchronized sequencer playback. And when two units of volca fm are connected, you can clone the sound programs and sequence data from volca fm to volca fm.

The volca fm is an ideal solution to the synthesist’s challenge of having a high-quality FM synthesizer in the toolkit, with control elements that make it sparkle in modern musical contexts.

It is not intuitive and the instructions are horrendous. It is made of very inexpensive plastic and looks and feels like a cheap toy. having a speaker is nice although the volume is lacking. i would gladly give this back for a refund...

I use the Volca FM along with a Volca Sample and Volca Modular. They all work similarly, and are easy to use and create/modify sounds. Super fun little synth.

    • So much fun for this price?

I'm just diving into the Volca FM, but so far it's really fun and at this price point I had to try it. I've watched some youtube videos with people describing how cool this thing can be and I am looking forward to getting over the learning curve.

I love the entire volca line, save for the beats, which just doesn't sound that great to me!?! I have bought the keys bass, sample, and now the FM from you....I'm hoping to finish off with the kick, eventually, and will likely keep buying them, if Korg keeps making new models!!

    • Cool synth. Fast shipping.

About how big/far apart are the key-button-pad things? I've got fairly chubby fingers, about 5/8 in/1.8 cm, so I want to know if I could be comfortable playing this on its own or if I should get an external MIDI keyboard.

      Open Reply - Ronald
They are a bit smaller than standard keys. If you watch the video on our site you can see the comparison to the fingers fairly well.
