JHS Pedals

collapse expand iconDescription

The JHS Pedals Muffuletta Distortion/Fuzz effects pedal offers a host of Holy Grail fuzz tones in one pedal. In 1967, the legendary Mike Matthews started experimenting with circuits for the electric guitar, and by early 1969, he created a circuit that has become one of the most legendary, collected and mythical pedals in the history of guitar effects. With 30+ versions made throughout its almost-half a century lifetime, the Big Muff Distortion/Fuzz has pioneered the sounds of some of the biggest bands and musical movements in history. The Muffuletta is a tribute to the legend and story of one of the greatest pedals ever invented.

The heart of the Muffuletta is the fact that it replicates five classic Big Muff circuits from years gone by, as well as a new and original JHS version for a total of six Muff modes, all executed without any digital signal processing or digital emulation. When you choose a mode, you are achieving analog tone that uses real components and values found in the original units. JHS has selected their favorite classic versions from the pages of history and made them available in one small format pedal that is easy to understand, operate and do what it should do: replicate rare, expensive, mythical and sought-after versions of this circuit with ease.

The Muffuletta features four controls: Volume, Tone, Sustain and Mode. The Volume control works just like any other volume control; the Tone control lets you brighten or darken your overall tone; the Sustain control is best understood as a gain or distortion control as it gives more distortion to the circuit; and the Mode control lets you choose from the six different versions of the Big Muff on the fly.

A while back I bought the JHS muffaletta and it was the best sounding Muff I ever heard. In my search for tone I have tried so many hundreds of Petals and amps and have NeVER been truly happy until I started using and Running in parallel JHS Petals. I usually will run the JHS hard drive parallel with the Violet, the AT plus, or the Pack Rat and the Colour Box v2 makes everything just sound better. The petals are very responsive and sound great, would definitely recommend them to anyone.

I have a bunch of fuzz pedals, EHX muff pedals have always been the best by a long shot. I'm not trying to be Gilmour, I like super heavy, fat and chewy fuzz, grunge, doom, sludge, whatever you want to call it, heavy and gnarly, super saturated chords that tingle your brain and this pedal does it in spades. It's basically getting every EHX muff in one, the clones are great, the best setting on this pedal is the JHS mode, it's the best fuzz I've ever heard. I still love my EGX Rams Head, it's my favorite and at half the price you're crazy not to consider it but the JHS setting has a little something extra special. If you can afford the JHS, go for it, if not, go for an EHX muff, the nano, big muff and Rams Head are all excellent choices.
