Ibanez S521 BBS
A very nice little price-point guitar for the beginner or the experienced player. Light in weight, with an extremely comfortable neck, it possesses excellent playability and tonal quality. The mahogany body is quite resonant for such a thin body, and gives excellent feedback when playing unplugged. The pickups/electronics were a pleasant surprise as well. Overall, an exceptional acquisition for low $$$, Fun to play, well set up out of the box, and great for jamming or practice or whatever. I would consider gigging with it. If lost or stolen, I would want to get another. Fit and finish is excellent and is typical of Ibanez' fine products. I did change the control knobs out for aesthetic reasons.

Needed extra maintenance
I got this guitar cause of the reviews. But when I pulled it out of the box it had major fret buzz on all but 2 open strings. So I spent another $100 for someone to fix it. He said the frets were not in good shape either and had to fix those. But now, I have a nice guitar. I just wish it came out of the box in good condition, like the Fender Strat I got from Bill's Music in Catonsville the month before.

A lot of very nice features with a few minor issues. For a less than $500 this guitar is definitely a winner. Super light weight and comfortable shape. The neck is super playable, slightly thicker than the wizard neck on the 550s and RG series but very accessible for any skill level. The split pickups provide a somewhat nuance range of sounds that aren't quite as different as the switch diagram would suggest. Very nice but an HSS setup would be just as diverse. The thin body appears to have presented the design team with some functionality challenges. For one the input jack works well and is out of the way without requiring some gaudy metal plate to change the angle. The recess make it hard to remove the cord without pulling the cord itself, not the metal jacket. The super thin body has the 5 way switch raised up with a cover that breaks up the sleek esthetic. The switch is located in a perfect spot and work great, It just looks, meh. If you are having fret buzz I recommend finding 'the Google ' and learning how to adjust your neck relief. I had a terrible buzz at the 4th fret that completely killed the notes, one slight turn with an Allen wrench and all is good. IMHO some light setup skills can make your guitar play and feel much more personal. Just .ake small adjustments and and take your time. I have a few guitars made in Indonesia and thet are well built and finished. Not gibson costum shop finished but very respectable This is an excellent guitar to start on or play for along time . You kids have fun.

Love the pickups, great looking body, lightweight and it's super EZ to play. Cleans are gorgeous and I think the OD and lead tones sound very very good. I know it's nowhere near a top of the line Ibanez-- but the value this guitar provides stands out. Yes--- I did have to do a setup on this but I have to do that on EVERY guitar I buy these days.
No I will not buy this product again

The input jack for the cable there's a terrible design, you can actually chip the wood of the body because it's not an all metal input, also you cannot use a wireless system they don't fit at all none of them not even an extender. Plus I had string buzzing that the tech at the store was not capable of getting out of the strings. What I did like about this guitar was how lightweight it is and it did have a beautiful paint finish. But as always Guitar Center took it back I bought another Ibanez guitar that I'm now completely happy with.
I would buy another in a heartbeat

Have owed this guitar for a few years now. It was my first electric guitar, but I had been playing an acoustic for a few years. I'm a 36 year old adult who was a beginner at age 30. This guitar is the reason I actually learned to play, and continued to play. I went to GC with an Epiphone LP that was on sale on my mind. The set up was terrible, and I started just playing everything else on the wall. I picked up the s521 and fell in love instantly. The neck is perfect for a beginner, but not just for a beginner. The thin neck makes it easy to fret, and the setting spacing seems wider than other guitars, so it helped me with chords. (I have thick hands, so other guitars were tougher to play without accidently muting other strings). The electronics are solid, and I would consider them very solid for the price point. This guitar is worth every penny, and truly worth more, especially when compared to Fender and Gibson products. To get a guitar of this quality, set up ready out of the box like this in Fender or Gibason, expect to pay close to double the price of this guitar.

My son chose this for his first guitar. He loves the look, feel, and that it is lightweight. The sound is awesome. The salesman at GC was surprised at the great sound and quality pickups. My son chose the red color and it looks awesome.

i understand the frets are jumbo's. The neck is thin-is the neck a little wider? what are the pick ups like?
I’m very sorry. Your question is not clear. The pups on the S521 S are Quantum H. They're ceramic. That means they're loud.submitted4 years ago

What is the actual weight of this guitar? The site shows the fretboard as EBONY black but other sites show a lighter brownish fretboard is the one shown on this site show an older model? Do the ones you have the lighter brownish fretboard like the 2 Epiphone Les Pauls I bought from GC?
It's actually a Jatoba fretboard. It would end up being a darker brown color, not black.submitted6 years ago
