Ibanez

Description

Just as each new Periphery release seems to turn progressive metal around another 180 degrees, Jake Bowen, the source of the band’s rich tapestry of guitar-based ambient soundscapes, has also moved the boundaries of guitar design and performance with his new Ibanez signature instrument—the JBM10FX.

Using the Ibanez RGA as a foundation, Bowen’s departures from that iconic instrument are many. The JBM10FX’s Maple Wizard III neck allows for warp-speed fretboard work and smooth access to the upper frets. The JBM10FX features a bound Indian rosewood fretboard with jumbo frets that bears Jake’s own custom inlay at the 12th fret. Add a reverse headstock for yet another striking element of visual distinction.

The key feature of the JBM10FX is its fixed bridge design, a first for the Ibanez JBM series. Jake chose the Gibraltar Standard II Bridge, designed to provide optimal transfer of each string's vibration through the guitar body. Its smooth surface also maximizes playing comfort. Gotoh MG-T locking machine heads provide superior tuning stability and help to expedite string changes.

The JBM10FX also features Jake’s signature DiMarzio Titan pickups, developed under Jake’s supervision. Jake describes them as, “the perfect combination of tight and aggressive.” The JBM10FX ships tuned to drop-C (1D, 2A, 3F, 4C, 5G, 6C). Case sold separately.

Now that I've put some miles into my new JBM10FX, I'm comfortable admitting this guitar has been an amazingly underrated purchase. My past experiences with Ibanez were mostly cheaper product lines and I'd end up getting rid of them before long. That will not be the case with this guy. At a similar price point, I also own a PRS Holcomb SE and had to shell out a few hundred to get the guitar to hold a tuning (replaced nut, new bridge, locking tuners). I was concerned I might run into the same issues with the JBM10FX but to my great surprise I've had no tuning issues whatsoever! I'd still consider swapping out the bridge for hipshot, but the stock bridge is still comfortable enough that I won't be putting a rush on that. The locking tuners have been awesome, and the Titans are perfect for the proggy metalcore I intended to play with this guitar. One small fault: some minor finishing problems are the only reason I'd give this guitar a 4.5. Overall the body and neck are in really great shape, but there are areas in the switchblade cavity that are missing paint, and some imperfect lines along the binding. Nothing that affects playability, just something my retentive self will always notice. But all things considered, at this price, I'm blown away. After picking up a couple of Strandbergs over the last few years, I figured I'd spoiled myself out of ever enjoying a guitar worth less than $2000... Thanks to the JBM10FX I was very wrong.
