Description
The SR Portamento offers a panga panga fingerboard that extends the length of the standard SR neck to a hefty 30-fret length. Several years in the making, the SR Portamento's new AeroSilk piezo system delivers an uncanny touch of hollowbodied openness, and realizes the innovative Upright Double Bass sound to blend into the mix that both inspires and redefines the role of the solid-body bass.
30-Fret Neck
The SR Portamento features an extended 30-fret panga panga fretboard for playing in upper registers usually only accessible on an upright.
5-Piece SR Maple/Bubinga Thru-Neck
The SR Portamento features 5-piece maple/bubinga thru-neck for increased sustain and superior tone.
Piezo Level Control
On the back of the SR Portamento are recessed controls assigned to each individual string to control the volume of the Ibanez-exclusive AeroSilk Piezo pickup. Perfect string balance and response can be achieved by adjusting the volume to accommodate different string gauges.
Custom Bridge for AeroSilk Piezo System
The Custom bridge is created specifically for the optimum performance of the AeroSilk Piezo pickup system. Unique plastic saddles were designed to work in concert with the piezo pickups and enhance the acoustic "stand-up" quality of the sound.
Bartolini MK-1 Pickups
The MK-1 pickups are a split coil design that provides a very wide frequency range and enhanced definition for maximum accuracy. The Neck and bridge pickups have equal response, like traditional single coils, but without the hum and noise.
AeroSilk Piezo System With Active Tone Control
The EQ section incorporates the controls of the Bartolini pickups with the AeroSilk Piezo system. Controls include a neck volume, bridge volume, and bass and treble controls for the Bartolini MK-1 pickups and a Master volume and a tone control for the Piezo system.

Professional Musician, in a former period of my life, and not a professional bass player. My primary instrument is electric & acoustic guitar. I've recently started composing and recording and needed a bass that didn't beat my fingers up too badly. This is an amazing bass guitar! Impossible to describe the fun I've had since getting it. When I was playing live in the 80s, I treated myself to a handmade B.C. Rich Bich neck-through and have loved that sustain and tone ever since. This Ibanez didn't disappoint!

The magnetic pickups are quite powerful and don't really need to be active for my use, and the active piezo system is off the charts. One bass with such a combination of pickups, tone possibilities are practically endless. This is the first fretless bass with an unlined fretboard that I feel truly comfortable with. Even more, this bass came with D'Addario flat-wound strings already on it, so I didn't have to change strings. It came out of the box already set up and ready to play. I play at church on the Praise Team, and I found out that playing with just the Piezo system works best in that environment, but you should hear this baby through a multi-effects pedal!
Excellent addition to your bass arsenal

Great instrument, when I received it i tuned it up and began to put it through its paces. LoL All my basses already are strung with D'Addario so I was glad those came with them as standard gear so for me no need to restring ..I played a half dozen familiar songs and enjoyed every minute. No problem adjusting to the absence of frets to me thats the point of going fretless no lines no frets. Ample marking across the top of the neck. Lots of possibilities are in my hand as far as range and tone and various techniques . Cant wait to explore more

Great playing bass, but lack of shielding makes for a lot of noise
Flexible 5 string fretless

I've played an upright bass and a fretted 5-string Fender Jazz bass guitar for years and thought it was time to try a fretless bass guitar. When I saw this was in stock at a local Guitar Center I decided to go in and play around with it. Had so much fun with it and liked the feel, sound, etc. so I decided to take it home with me. What really blew me away was the fingerboard extending all the way to the pickups. This gives me 10 more notes per string than my Fender. It's awkward to finger those upper notes because the "frets" are so close together up there. But that's just a matter of practice. I really like being able to solo up in the stratosphere and don't have big enough hands that a 6 string would be practical. With the 2 magnetic and piezo bridge pickups, it is really flexible in terms of tone.

I was wondering if this bass comes strung with flatwound strings? If not, is it possible to have them installed prior to shipping? I don't mind the extra cost.

Not this specific bass, but you could find one comparable to it with the lines or go through the manufacturer and see if they can offer a special order for one.submitted5 years ago
