Ibanez
Description
The ever-evolving Ibanez BTB series has always aimed to expand the player’s range of creative expression. The elegantly contoured, massive body of select tone woods combines with dedicated hardware and electronics to produce huge, rich tones. Neck-through construction, a two-octave fretboard, and a super-deep cutaway, promise sleek playability and enduring sustain. The BTB series defines what the “Boutique Bass” is all about.

The BTB846 is a 6-string bass featuring an Ash wing body with Poplar Burl top/Mahogany back that creates a sound that is response, articulate, and deep. A 35” scale, 5pc Maple/Jatoba through-neck provides superior resonance, and enhances sustain. The Jatoba fretboard sports highly-durable Stainless Steel frets that produce a clear, bright tone, and a “zero” fret provides accurate intonation, while allowing open strings to ring with the same resonance as notes played up the neck.

Electronics include Bartolini® BH2 pickups for a tight bottom-end, punchy mid-range, and smooth response. Combined with the Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band EQ, w/3-way mid-frequency switch, the BTB846 contains tonal variations that enhance simple chord work, as well as complex soloing. The Mono-rail V bridge allows for a wide range of adjustment, with each isolated saddle securely locked down to the body for optimum vibration transfer, and minimal sympathetic string interference. D'Addario® NYXL strings are installed for expanding dynamic range and harmonic response. A high-tech Neutrik® locking output jack insures a secure connection, preventing accidental disconnect.

I moved to a six string from a four and was apprehensive concerning the size of the board and the weight. But neither has been an issue. The weight is noticeable coming from Ibanez SRs but it feels possibly less than ten pounds and I have no problems in a two hour practice session with a standard strap. And I have rotator cuff issues that made me swear off Les Pauls in the 90s. The board is VERY wide coming from guitars and four string basses. But it's very thin (typical Ibanez) and the edges are perfect so it remains relatively comfortable. The short aclimation period is worth it for a low B and high C. The tone of the Ibanez preamp and Bart BH2s is perfect. With everything flat I get the usual Ibanez growl. Pushing the mids yields an EBMM Sting Ray vibe. Moving to the front pickup and rolling off the treble gives me a slightly muted motown sound, then wrapping the strings at the bridge and also rolling off mids gives me a decent upright tone. Rear pickup, pushed mids, and a little off the treble gives me a horn-like Jaco tone. Just like my SRs the BTB is the most versatile bass one can buy. It does it all. Setup was a breeze. Fretwork was literally perfect and so I'm able to get a very low action out of it. The fit and finish everywhere was flawless - and I'm super critical about that, as well as the playability. If there's a more comfortable and more flexible six string out there I've never heard of it. The only thing I dislike is the locking input. This totally blows and will be coming off asap.
