This system is presented through performed examples and graphics, and is usable by drummers of all styles. Dividing your drumming into time signature, subdivision, dynamics, instrument sounds, limbs, style, and phrases, Mike demonstrates dozens of grooves, fills, and patterns from easy to extremely advanced. He systematically shows you how to use the Grid to expand your understanding of music and drumming, and improve your physical abilities. Filmed in two different studios on two different drum kits, including Mike's signature Dream Theater setup during the recording of the band's latest album, this 2-DVD set presents a brand-new and unique philosophy by one of the leading drummers of our time. Using Mike's system, you can grow exponentially as a drummer by increasing your speed, developing better independence, learning to use ostinatos and expanding your knowledge of styles. You will also learn to use polyrhythms, play in odd time signatures, develop a deeper understanding of the basics of rhythm and become a more creative player.

I bought this last year and have seen it at least three times. He makes sense of what it takes to build a groove, but there is not any technique and "tips of the trade" that would help me aspire to be a better drummer. Mangini seems to be a little geeky in this video. I think I would rather just watch him play live.

I purchased this last fall, since I've always been a big Dream Theater fan and I thought it would be great to see what Mangini could add to my drumming. While I really like the concept of drilling down into your grooves and categorizing what you're doing, I don't feel there was much to take away from it as far as actual drumming technique. It's just a perspective change, not much beyond that. I also feel that Mangini gets distracted too often during the DVD, occasionally wandering off on a tangent. While it's not bad enough to say to avoid it, if you're looking to improve your writing I would go with Benny Greb's DVD, or for Thomas Lang's if you're looking to improve your technique.
