Heil Sound PR 22 UT (Utility)

A friend recommended this microphone after I thoroughly hated the sound of the SM58 in some live recordings. I needed a handheld mic for the vocalists while also trying to multitrack record in a live scenario. This mic blew me away. It's worth having in your arsenal. I haven't tried it on a snare yet, but I have no doubt it will also be my go-to for snare.

Mic is so clear it helps me improve my vocals.

This Heil PR22 UT is an accurate, feedback free microphone that is a pleasure to use at a gig. Your voice won't get lost in the mix, unless your band is extremely loud. It looks good, sounds good and seems tough enough to take some abuse, ( which it will never get from me ). The things that were left out of the UT, utility package, are things that most gigging musicians would never need, and are not worth the additional cost. Apparently, someone at Heil must be practical!

Most mics of this type roll of the low end to reduce handling noise. This one doesn't, which helps with male voices or any signals with significant low end content. I got it to to complement my AT2050 for mid-side recording, the results are excellent. You can't beat for the price.

I have never liked the sound of my own voice. To me, it has always sounded muddy and nasally. As a result, I have always felt very intimidated by the prospect of singing in our band. Fortunately, I was happy to be one of the backing musicians anyway. And we always used those industry standard 57s and 58s. I heard good things about this mic and so, I thought why not? Guitar Center offered me 30 days. So, I've used this mic for some six months now and I'm not giving it up. At first, the differences between this and the standards didn't seem really super noticeable. We don't have a piano player so, when we decided to play some piano songs, I quickly jumped off the guitar and started learning the piano. The next step was that I learned songs that I knew the words to and the other band members said that I should go ahead and sing the leads on those numbers. This mic has honestly made this possible because when I hear MY voice in the monitor, it actually sounds good to me. It is very confidence inspiring. I asked the other guys if this is actually what my voice sounded like to them and they all said "Absolutely!" Seriously, I give the credit to this mic and suddenly I'm enjoying an entirely new avenue of musical expression for me.
