Heil Sound

Description

The Heil PR 22 represents completely redesigned dynamic microphone technology designed for a wide range of professional applications such as live sound, commercial broadcast, and sophisticated recording. The microphone's wide frequency range and outstanding low handling noise outperforms the tired, 30+ year old industry technology and can withstand huge amounts of SPL. The end result is a microphone that can answer the call to any application. For example, the gorgeous upper mid range makes the PR 22 among the best live vocal microphones, while its outstanding frequency response and superb dynamic range suit it perfectly for use with a snare drum.

Since 1982, Heil Sound has been a leading manufacturer of communications microphones and has a paramount understanding of phasing. When properly applied, this knowledge creates outstanding cardioid patterns with unbelievable rear rejection that removes unwanted sounds that try to enter from the off axis rear. It's pattern control is outstanding. This exceptional performance is achieved by using the ideal combination of materials for the large low mass diaphragm and a special mixture of neodymium, iron, and boron that gives the PR 22 the strongest magnet structure available.

In addition to the special magnet structure, the PR 22 microphone achieves its exceptional performance by using a large 1-1/8" low mass voice coil assembly with a very unique internal sorbothane suspension system that has been designed to reduce undesirable handling noise. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind, entering them out of phase. Thus, it produces a very linear cardioid pattern and reduces the proximity effect while achieving perfect articulation. This new Heil element is usable in extreme high sound pressure levels and is immune to overload conditions making it perfect for vocal and live sound applications.

Yes, this mic sounds really good, especially when you speak into it in a studio. Its lack of bass boost from proximity effect is nice. But as a live vocal mic? Forget it. Gain-before-feedback is awful, mainly because in order to reduce proximity effect without resorting to a "Variable-D" system (like EV RE-20) you need to make the pattern wider. And oh boy, it's pretty wide. So it's difficult to get loud in wedges, or in the house, and it does a great job of picking of stage wash. But it does make a nice snare drum mic. Not as good as a Beyer M201, but then it's half the price of the Beyer.

Bought this in the red spotlight series version that uses the same capsule but actually cost less. Has more breath, air, and articulation than any equal or higher priced dynamics such as the beta57,e835,or n/d967. While the sound is definately superior, the polar pattern is not as tight. This may pose a problem with extreme stage levels or bleed/feedback prone situations. It is condenser-like in its range and you dont have to eat it like some of the super/hyper-cardioids. Has a very usable though not overpowering proximity effect. About time we have a large diaphram dynamic. You wont know it by the windscreen size though.{its a 1-1/8" capsule} The case is a little large for my taste but contains 2 extra screens for a total of 3,in gold, silver.and black plus a mic clip coated in teflon for easy slip and slide removal. Also a foam outer wind/pop filter is included. A super deal for what you get. This mic can also be used on drum overheads/snare with very good results. I use this now and have a e/v pl44{another great deal} for times when we really crank or bleed/ feedback is overwhelming, usually due to other mics on stage. Highly recommended.
