Hagstrom

collapse expand iconDescription

The Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar covers all genres from blues/rock to jazz/fusion and back again. With an arched semi-hollow maple body, its looks are as sweet as its tone. 2 Hagstrom humbuckers, combined with the resonant, semi-hollow body, provide plenty of power. And no Hagstrom is complete without their famous, fast-playing neck. The Viking has the patented H-Expander truss rod which provides tension at either end and runs the entire length of the neck. The rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin set maple neck.

Another Hagstrom exclusive, the resinator fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. It offers the articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast.

The self-lubricating graphite composite nut is much harder than bone or plastic resulting in more string vibration through the neck. Tuning is also improved and string binding is eliminated by self-lubrication.

A long travel Tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece further increase tone, sustain, and intonation quality. 18:1 gear ratio machine heads ensure fully accurate tuning.

The Viking's high-grade polyester finish is hard, smooth, and more dense than polyurethane, so its guaranteed to look great and provide excellent protection and sonic performance. Case sold separately.

Hagstrom

This is an excellent guitar. I currently own a Les Paul and strat, but as a jazz musician, a hollow body was naturally the next step in my collection. However, I decided against a full hollow body and went with the viking semi hollow body instead, and I'm very satisfied with my decision. When I first played it, I was surprised by it's versatility; it handles everything from jazz to rock and can more than cope with distortion. With a Hagstrom, you definitely get a great value in relation to the comparable 335, which done by epiphone is just not quite enough guitar and done by gibson is more than most would like to spend on a semi hollow body. In all, the viking is an amazing guitar independent of the price, which quite reasonable. I didn't have the luxury of reading a review before ordering, but my gamble paayed off, and hopefully this will help future Hagstrom-owner hopefuls.

resinator fretboard?

I ordered my first Viking and it arrived with cracks down the middle of the fretboard around the position markers above the 14th fret. I returned this one hoping for a clean fretboard but the second one arrived with a crack down the middle of the fretboard above the 14th fret. The rest of the body and finish of this guitar was beautiful and the first one I received I actually played and loved it. I may wait and try my luck again because I'd really love to own one of these guitars.

So for background, I have a ton of guitars including a Gibson ES-335 and this one is unique. It will be compared to the 335 because of the look and what it is but it is a different instrument altogether. The pickups are hotter, the neck is different the bridge is different so to me this has a feel and sound all it's own and I love it. Mine is perfectly set up a f I cannot find a single imperfection on the factory finish. The fretboard actually feels like ebony and in my opinion is better than the composite fretboards in some Martin models. It is stunning to look at and playing it is just a great experience. Everything from warm creamy mellow jazz tones to punk noise can be achieved along with some crisp surf jangle it's just a fantastic instrument. I also got the he Hagstrom case with is really nice. If you're adventurous and looking foe something to add to your collection, this will carve out a unique place all it's own.

Save you money to buy something else with better quality. Ordered online based off reviews, big mistake. For the price this should have better quality knobs, pickguard, pickup rings, and truss rod cover. Pickguard and wiring buzz against the body. The neck pickup didn't work. It looks good from a distance, up close, the binding looks like it's been painted on. The bridge hardware is very loose fitting. And the tuner keys have casting ridges which may cut you. Returning.

This guitar is poorly made and has a very cheep feel. The sound is interesting and I like the tone, but a good epiphone in this price range would be a much better value. I'm very thankful for Guitar Center's return policy. I ordered this guitar on Guitar Center's website and returned it to my local store.

  • Great guitar for the price

Use mostly for practice - with small hands it's a godsend because of the narrow neck At 72 yrs, it helps with the arthritis in the hands

great guitar, had to gently file the edges of frets. They had an edge, no bad but needed a little filing. happy with sound I use # 11's with wound G. I always have liked the wound G. If you want to buy the Hagstrum case: as they say in New York, ""FORGET ABOUT IT!"" I ordered mine in January and every 30 days they told me they were back ordered. after 5 months of this delay. I cancelled my case order and bought an off brand which worked out fine after I lowered the neck supports in the case. The bridge is fine but the tail piece is about 1/4 inch off from the line up of bridge?? it may need to be lowered so the strings have a straight line from tail pc. up over the bridge and up the neck. So far no strings have jumped off the bridge because of the angle. If so, I will need to lower it. I do enjoy this guitar but like anything else when you pay decent money for something you'd expect not to have to adjust it much. guitar neck is fine and so is everything else about it.
